A Bad Telephone Situation.
The telephone (situation in Lin
coln county, particularly in Toledo
and Newport, is not in the shape
that it ought to he for the U-st ser
vice of the jn'ople, and for the com
panies operating phones themselves.
There are two . commercial com
panies doing business in the county,
each with a fair share of the busi
ness, and each trying to get more.
While we freely admit that these
companies have it right to do busi
ness, yet it seems to us that the
puhlic has some rights in the mat
ter, and it is for the puhlic that we
sjHiik. Take the two systems, with
all the phones each have in oper
ation, and the county is fairly well
covered as to lines and phones. But
when this is divided and the service
is cut in two it ruins the service the
U'st the companies can do.
The rcasonahle, logical thing for
the two companies to do is to con
solidate and give the people the hest
possihle service. We do not know,
nor do we undertake to judge, as to
the rights or wrongs'' of the two
companies now oierating, but we
do know that the puhlic on the
other side is getting tired of the
mixed situation. It seems strange
to us that, the companies themselves
do not see the awkward position
they are in and do not combine in
some businesslike manner. Surely
the men composing the management
of the companies have enough busi
ness acumen to remedy this con
dition. As we stated aWve, it is none of
our business except in so fai( as the
puhlic is concerned, and it is for
them that we call the attention of
these companies to the condition
that exists, and we ask in the name
of the public that they remedy it.
Piiehard P. Goin of Waldport an
nounces his candidacy for School
SujH-rintendcnt of this county, at
the coming primaries. Mr. (ioin
is not a stranger to the voters of
this county, having lieen a resident
of Waldport the treat or part of his
life. I3y prof.-, i :i he is a school
teacher and is therefore qualified
to till the respon.-iMe position for
which he seeks.
The persistent efforts of his
friends from all over the county
have at last been heeded and Ira
Wade has concluded to announce
himself as a candidate for the nom
ination of Clerk to succeed himself.
.Mr. Wade has held the position as
(uint j- Clerk of this county for the
past six years anil has at all times
conducted the oflice satisfactorily to
the public. We will say without
fear of contradiction that no other
county in the State has a more care
ful, painstaking and obliging Clerk
than has Lincoln county. His
many friends will lie pleased to read
his announcement.
