The ladies of Toledd will give a leap
year dance at Woodman Hall tomor
row (Saturday) eveuinglo which every
body, especially the young men, are
invited. This is the first ladies' dance
of the season and a good time is antici
pated. Boys, come its all free. The
girls foot tbe bills.
The dance given at Woodman Hall
last Friday evening by tbe local Fire
Department was one of the most suc
cessful affairs of the kind ever held in
Toledo. Several visitors from, neigh
boring towns were present. Oyer 80
tickets were sold, and as a result the
fire boys have added $54 to their fuuds
in the treasury.
Wm. P. Keady of Waldport, whose
announcement as. a candidate for the
office of Commissioner appears in an
other column, is one of Lincoln county's
enterprising business men. He baa
been for several years a resident of
Waldport and is well acquainted with
Liuooln county and is well qualified for
the office for which he seeks.
County School Superintendent
George Bethers announces his candi
dacy to the office of Superintendent to
succeed himself. Mr. Bethers needs
no introduction to the voters of this
county. He has held tbe office to
which be aspires for re-election for the
past eight years. He has filled the
position satisfactorily and our people
know that should he be re-elected the
office of School Superintendent will be
in. charge of a man well qualified to
superintend the schools of our county. '
Waldport Items
' If yon. have not been in Waldport
lately please be prepared to open your
eyes when you do come. The town has
been improving wonderfully and many
new buildings are being erected. Tbe
buildings are mostly of the better kind
and present an air of prosperity. The
Waldport Lnmber Company is improv
ing its property and has purchased a
tract of cedar to be used for shingles.
Everybody looking for-work has it, and
taken altogteher the last six months
has meant much to Waldport.
Friday February 21st was Social
night for Ocean View Assembly Num
ber 192, United Artisans. After a
short session the doors of the hall
were thrown open and a large number
of friends weie welcomed. While all
were eujoying themselves within they
were very much surprised to hear the
band strike up a lively two step and
the officers of the lodge immediately
invited the band lo enter. After a
splendid repast consisting of the usual
"goodies'raud to which all present did
justice, the floor was cleared for dauo
ing which continued to a late iiour.
The Saturday night dances given by
the band are becoming quite popular
and are rusnlting in quite a revenue.
Refreshments are reived at every da..ce
much to the delight of all.
Mr. Kent, owner of the hall has
promised to put a ctage in the hall and
when this is done the boys coutem
pkte giving a play or minstrel show.
Friday night a Leap Year dance will
be given at which the usual order of
things will be reversed and tbe ladies
will he ''allowed" to pay the entire 'ex
penses of the evening.
School Notes
Several pupils have beeu away from
school this week on account of sictfuess.
There was an election of officers at the
meeting of the 'Aeifnv society last Fri
day evening and the following officers
were elected : Thomas Hawkins, Presi
dent: Carl Gildersleve, Secretary;
Jesse Plunkctt, Sergeant at Arms.
The marble season is now here and
marbles are all the go.

An Ordinance to permanently locate
the grade on 4th street between the
east side of Hill street and the wett
side of Graham street and to repeal aH.
Ordinances in conflict herewith.
Be it ordained I if the common coun
cil of the city ot Toledo:
Section 1. The grade as now com
pleted and plunked on Fourth street
from east side of Hill street to west
sido of Graham street, be and the same
is hereby ordained to be the permanent
grade on said Fourth st reet.
Section 2. All Ordinances and parts
of Ordinances in conflict herewith are
hereby repealed.
Section 3. As there is doubt and un
certainty as lo completed grade con
forming with former grade established,
this Ordinance shall be in full force
and effect after being signed by the
Mayor and properly advertised or pos
ted. x

G. A, Hall this week installed a seven
lamp Standard Gillett gas light plant
at the courthouse, and also in his pool
room. This gives a brilliant white
light and is a greaf improvement over
tbe old light used.
Stanley Pritchnrd who has beon visit

morning for Portland. He went
horseback, by the way of Falls City
and he may find it a little bit muddy.
Charles Bradeson, Superintendent of
construction for the Lincoln County
Telephone Company, is building a
line this week lo the R. A. An
derson boat works, which is also to
be extended on up Mill creek. We un
derstand that the company expects to
build about sixty miles of line this
coming summer.

In celebrating the opening of the
new electric interurban lino be
tween Portland and Salem on Feb
ruary 18th, tbe latter city enter
tained numerous delegations from
tbe various cities of tbe Willamette
Valley. Over a hundred business
men went from Portland in two
special cars. Great enthusiasm
was aroused by tbe speeches of both
visitors and Salem men, and all uni
ted in emphasizing the necessity for
wide-awake, aggressive advertising
to develop both city and country.
Salem contemplates an immediate
campaign as a result.
Judge MeFadden received notice
yesterday that another victim of bis
vigorous administration- as district
attorney bad been compelled to
fork over $250 as a fine for violation
of tbe local option law at Eugene .
The new sum raises tbe total of lines
paid into tbe Lane county Treasury
during bis administration of but
eight months to $3,000. During
tbe same time t lie total of tbe fines
collected, in Lincoln county is S'.loO,
making tbe total during the eight
months of $3,9")0. During 11
months proceeding Judge . MeFad
den 's term, no lines bad lieen col
lected in Lincoln, although it was,
notorius that conditions there were
almost wide open. The fines col
lected in eight months lack but $"0
of Ijeing double the district attor
ney's salary for a year, which is
82,000. A valuable adjunction to
good society is an efficient officer
who is fearless in the discbarge of
bis duty, and that is tho class in
which Judge MeFadden is to lie
found. He has, like all aggressive
men, aroused occasional dislikes,
and has been a few times animad
verted against, but w hen he is put
on the earthworks in official capac
ity there is certain to he good hard
slugging, if necessary for the public

An Ordinance to amend Ordinance
No. fid entitled, "In the matter of re
. gulating the salaries an 1 fees of the
subordinante officers of .the city of
Toledo."
Be it ordained by the Common Coun
cil of the city of Toledo, Oregon.
Section 1. That Ordinance No. 50
entitled an Ordiuance to amend Ordin
ance No. 37 eutitlod, in the mutter of
regulating the fees and salaries of the
subordinate ollicers of the city of To
ledo, be amended to read as follows:
Section 2. That the Marshal of the
city of Toledo, Oregon, shall receive an
his comp' n-ation for acting as such
Marshal, the sum of $20 per month aud
shall receive fees only in case of mak
ing arrests or serving subpoenas oil
witnesses in cases before the City Re
corder, which f es shall be the same as
constable for Oregon, and shall be
collected bv the City Recorder as pro
vided by Ordinance for collection of
foes.
Passed by the Common Council and
approved by the Mayor of the city of
Toledo, Oregon, this 17 day of February,
