'oledo is situated in the com
mercial center of Lincoln county
on Depot slough, an arm of
Yaquina Bay, eight miles from the
ocean. It has railroad and water
transportation facilities. It is
situated in a good dairy, fruit and
stock-raising section, and Toledo
is growing rapidly. It has two
large sawmills one running now
aud the other will be in operation
within a few days whose com
bined output will be about 80,000
feet of lumber per day. We have
one of the best little towns in
Oregon j we have the best climate
in tht world; we have the best soil,
water, fish, timber, fruit and vege
tables; we have good churches and
schools; we have progressive, rust
bv!rs9 rnn, and we have
about 6oo of the most contented
and happy people on earth, so why
should we not toot our own horn
and let others kuow of our good
fortune in having snch a thriving
little town.
A great many -know there Is
such a place as Toledo, but there
are still a greater number who
have never heard of such a place
and we should ill make an effort to
"put them wise".
Weoffer excellent opportunities to
manufacturers, dairymen, farmers
and fruit-raisers, and if every citizen
who is interested would contribute
his share to advertising we would
soon be one of the largest and
most prosperous towns in Western
Oregon. Let us all put our shoul
der to the wheel and boost.
A Mammoth Edition.
The Oregon Daily Journal last
Sunday issued a mammoth edition
to commemorate the fifth anniver
sary of its existence. It contained
12 sections and x6o pages. It is a
great story of the advancement of
the whole Oregon country, pro
fusely illustrated with half-tones.
One entire page is devoted to scenes
in Lincoln county. In the section
describing the counties of Oregon,
t says of Lincoln county:
Lumber, diversified farming,' stock
Rising, dairying and fruit culture are
the principal industries of Lincoln
ouuty. Its land area is 1,008 square
miles aud its population 5,000. It has
nearly seven billion feet of stauding
timber. Its manufactories are valued
at 1100,000, farms 1700,000, and farm
products 200,000. It produced last year
100,000 pounds of butter and cheebe, 27,
000 pounds of wool and 30,000 bushels
of potatoes. Grain-raising is not
tarried on to an great extent. Lincoln
lias 200,000 acres of government land
open to settlement. The average price
per acre f wild land is 13 and
improved land $L5. There aro a
number of resorts in the county, the
chief of which is Newport, where pleas
ure seekers in large numbers congre
gate during the summer montis for
rest and recreation1 Vaquina Bay and
Al6eaUy are patronized to some ex
tent by coasting vessels aud must with

perous points. Toledu is the couuty
beat.
Reporls from every source of the
heavy travel from the East to the
Coast makes us wonder , why Lin
coln couuty is not making an effort
to advertise and induce some of
these many thousands of home
seekers to visit and locate with us

ments to offer these people than any
other location in the state. Why

While a Butte, Montana, woman
was banging clothes on a Hoe, the
ground gave way beneath her and
left her hanging to the clothes line.
It seems that there was an old mine
underneath, the timbers of "which
gave way, leaving her ia rather a
peculiar position.
