Portland, Or., July 29, 1907. Several cities, towns and villages in this state will make a material addition to their population as a result of ener getic work done collectively through the commercial bodies and individually by the citizens in advising thousands of people back East of tbe low-priced one way colonist rates which will be put on -' sale September 1 and continue until October 31, to Oregon, from all pointB in the United States. These rates are agreed upon by all the railroads in the United States and Canada and are controlled by the Trans continental Passenger Association, and Oregonians must bear in mind that the home csltcr is bcinz invited on similar rates to Canada, California, Washing ton, Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma and other states, and the state and com munity to which he will buy a ticket in the one that convinces him in. advance that their particular spot on this great earth is tbe one in which he should live. We have only one month left before the sale begins. Rates to Oregon from Kansas City. Omaha, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and all the great Missouri Valley and west of there, is 26, with a' reduction of $2.50 on each ticket east of Umatilla: from St Louis, $30; Chicago, 33; New York. 850, and a proportionate rate from every other point, large or small, but this ticket must be bought to your stajion, and not to Portland or some other city, if yon expect them to come to you, and it devolves uprfn the readers of tliix paper to see that every letter that goes oat ofthe postoflice carries wiih it cor rect information relative to these rates. Get all the faots from your local agent. H- Get yonr commercial body, or somt one of your business men to offer a prize tn the boys and girls who will write the greatest number of letters, m who will get actual results in bringing another family into the oommncity. Get together from 10 to 25 active citizens, raise a little fund for tbe pub lication of a small leaflet giving the im portant facta relative to your com munity, along with these rates', and have the leaflet so light that -it would not add to the cost of postago of a let ter, and have a copy of it put in every letter written. Several ministers throughout the dif ferent parts of the state, realizing the importance of these rates, are announc ing tbe details about them to their congregations and are asking that they write to their relatives and friends at a distance and tell them how cheaply they csn come to Orogon. The work of advertising these colonist rates is up to each community and each individual. If w.e could add a hundred thousand to the population of Oregon in the next year It would add many millions of dollars of additional wealth to the state. The school population of one district in Tillamook county wns doubled in six months through tbe correspondence of the pupils. Corvallis caused tho scleof TGOO,000 worth of 'and through advertising in well-known agricultural papers 'in the older states. The Oregon Development League received over 16,000 inquiries from people wanting to know about Oregou farming lands. There is an intense desire tn come to the Pacific Northwest on the part of people of the United States, and this in particularly true of Oregon. Mabo it , intensely true of your community. Get more pnrtinnlnrs; post others; pnt up attractive notices in the postotlice and in other public places; get new-comers to write to their old home papers, and as an inducement to do this, let them understand thut they can compete for the eighty prizes', or a total of $5000, offered bv the Portland Commercial Clnb. " ' . Nothing menus so much tn Oregon us tbe colonist rates, and when you read this remember that there is only one month in which to get in advance work. .
