The Reason Why.
Druromond, Wis., Sept. 19 (Special)
Whole families in Bayfield county
are singing the praises of Dodd's Kid

in experiences such as that of Mr. T.
T. Wold, a well known citizen here.
"I had such pains ?n my back that I
did not know what to do," says Mr.
Wold, "and as I came across an adver

for a box. That one box relieved me
of all my pains. My wife also nsed

A Consoling Thought.
Bramble Yes, I'm ugly, I know I'm
ngly; but there is one grand consolation.
Friend What is that?
Bramble If ever I should become
great, and the American people should
resolve to erect a statue to my memory,
they won't be able to make me out any
uglier than I am.
When a child I had a very severe at
tack of Diphtheria, which came nearprov
ing fatal. Upon recovery the glands of the
neck were very much enlarged, and after
the free use of iodine, the right one wa9
reduced to its normal size, but the left
one continued to grow very slowly at
first, until it was about the size of a goose
egg, which began to press on the wind
pipe, causing difficult breathing, and be
came very painful. An incision was made
and a large quantity of pus discharged.
The gland was removed, or as much as
could with safety be taken out. For ten
years I wore a little piece of cloth about an
inch long in my neck to keep the place
open. . During this time I had to have it
cut open by the doctor every time I took
cold or the opening clogged. In the Spring
or early Summer of 1884 I was persuaded
by my wife to use S. S. S., which I did,
strictly in accordance with directions. I
took twenty-six large bottles, and was en
tirely cured, for I have not suffered 6iuce

ANCIENT HISTORY. S
When the bells on a rural telephone
circuit began merrily jingling one June
morning half a dozen young women In
as many farmhouses forsook every
thing else, and with paper and pencil
before them took up the receivers. It
was the agreed time for a review of
ancient history, prior to the final ex
aminatlon In the "consolidated" high
school on Monday.
"I say, girls" said the first voice
when all were ready, "what does any
body know about Moses?"
"Oh, that's easy, Henrietta," was
the answer along the line. "Born 1738,
went Into exile 1G98, came back to
Egypt 1608 and led the Hebrews out
of bondage. He died when he was a
hundred and twenty years old."
"Please say those dates again.
Ethel."
"Seventeen-thlrty-eight, sixteen-nlne-ty-eight,
sixteen-flfty-eight"
"Aren't you saying them backward?"
"Why, no, stupid. It's B. C."
"That's 'Backward Counting,' you
know, Henrietta," Interrupted a third
voice.
"Oh, yes, of course. I ought to have
known. But say, girls, that's Just
what I want to know about. How did
you do It?"
"Do what?"
"Why, keep track of what year it
was when they had to count back
ward. Do you suppose Moses knew
how old he was coins: to be when he
died, and kept saying, I was a hundred
and twenty when I was born, in sev-enteen-eighteen
I'll be a hundred'
and so on til he died?"
"Of course not They counted their
ages forward."
"What I want to know," said voice
number four, "is how they knew what
year to begin to count, with. Now of
course we are adding a figure every
year. We started with the year one.
Thla Is nineteen-four, of course, and
next will be nlneteen-flve. But how
did those old-timers know In seventeen-thlrty-eight
B. C. that it was going to
be just that many years to the year
zero, or to whatever they called It be
fore our reckoning began?"
Into the transmitters of half a dozen
telephones and along a dozen miles of
wire was launched a confused murmur
of exclamation and query. At last It
quieted down when the calm voice of
Henrietta was heard coming down the
line.
"Oh, I can answer that one myself,
tfrls." she said. "It was started that
way, and all they had to do was to
Keep track. Its marked here In the
Bible that Adam was born In four
thousand and four, and of course,
knowing that, all he had to do was to
subtract one every year. It was bound
to come out even."
Give the Boys Poultry.
As usual, there Is loud complaint
from farmers that the children brought
up on the farm are getting uneasy and
want to try their wings elsewhere.
This is not to be wondered at when
these young people hear and read of
what is going on In the world. The
monotony of country life seems unbear
able to them, especially when from the
farm they obtain only plenty of hard
work, the food they eat and the
clothes they wear. True, one may say
that Is about all any one gets out of
life, but if we can plan some way
by which the young people can make
a start for themselves they will be
much more contented.
Poultry offers a way of trying out
the feeling of the young folks at small
expense. Give them a chance to raise
poultry and have the proceeds for their
own use, and in a year or two they
will have become reconciled to coun
try life and be willing to make it
their future or they will have shown
their litter lack of adaptability for it,
in which case the best thing for them
and for the parent Is to let them leave
the farm and take up the work for
which they are better fitted, but don't
lose your grasp on the young people
without first giving them a chance
to do for themselves on the farm and
show what is In them. Indianapolis

Declare Eskimos Doomed.
The Rev. Mr. Ryberg, pastor of the
First Congregational Church at Nome,
urges President Roosevelt to do some
thing toward saving the Eskimo popu
lation of Alaska.
"Though they have saved the lives
of hundreds of gold seekers," says he,
"this kind and childlike race la rapid
ly passing away. Its members are
meeting a sad and undeserved fate.
Shamefully neglected by our govern
ment, the last chapter of their history
Is being rapidly written in cruel char
acters of neglect and want, disease and
crime."
The minister declares that the res
ervations are unsuitable to Eskimo,
but that four to six colonies between
Point Barrow and the mouth of the
Yukon will solve the problem In two
years.
When we read that a person who
was sick a number of years was al
ways patient, we wonder If the same
can be said of the attending kin.
Paaa Death Watch R.nrr T.
"What are you doing sitting idling
wane your leuows do all the work?"
said the lawyer from the Stock Ex
change Building to the underground
cable workman. The electrician was
sitting on a tool box beside a manhole
at Washington and La Salle streets
when the lawyer Interrupted him. He
looked up, and then with a faint smile
said:
"I am the death watch."
"Explain yourself. 1 do not under
stand you."
"Well, those men in the hole are
constantly in danger of suffocation
from sewer gas. If I were In the hole
1 would run the same chance as they
do. For their safety I sit here In open
air. I am not In range of the gases.
If one of them Is overcome I get busy,
haul him into open air and call a doc
tor. See?"
The lawyer "saw" and went about
his business, admitting to himself that
there were tricks In all trades, and
this was one of the dangers which
beset conduit men that he had never
thought of. Chicago Record-Herald.
1 An Amplified Woman.
"The car was entirely empty, with
the exception of one man," said Miss
Myra Kelly. "He was the reverse of
the car. As I entered he rose, made
me an unsteady but magnificent bow
and said:
" 'Madam, phleashe be kind 'nough
to asahept thish plashe.' There was
nothing else for me to do, so I thanked
him and sat down.
"And for twenty blocks that Idiot
hung from a strap, swaying In the
breeze, with not a soul in the car
but ourselves. Occasionally I have
been taken for other women; but I
never before had any one think that
I was a car full."
Price of Theater Seats
There is much talk about the high
prices charged for seats In the thea
ters of Eastern cities. Apropos of thla
is a story of a Boston box-office man
and a young man from the country.
The latter confidently approached ths
vendor of tickets, and Inquired:
"What's your best seats worth to
day?" "Two dollars," was the reply.
The rustic hesitated for a minute,
and then pityingly drawled:
"Say, I don't want to take the seat
away."
Oldest Theater la the Country.
The oldest theater In America, the
Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia,
is virtually to be torn down and a
modern playhouse substituted. This
theater has rounded out nearly a cen
tury of life as a pnrveyor of amuse
ment to the people of the Quaker City.
It was built in 1809 and about all of
the great American actors and actress
es who have appeared before the foot
lights 6ince that time have trod its
boards.
