Old and Young.
It was nine o'clock in the evening
the night of the great dance in the as
sembly room.
She was almost ready. A few finnl
touches, a little readjustment before
the mirror, and then, beautiful and
stately, she stepped out in the hall and
slowly descended the stairs.
She was very young. But her calm,
serious faee, her ease and perfect poise,
and othr certain little gestures of
surety in herself, indicuted that she
was not new at the business of the
evening. Somehow there was a touch
of sadness to her face.
As she passed down the stairs, she
paused in front of the library, with her
parly wrap over her aim. In the
library, her face shaded from the eveu
ing lamp, sut an old woman. Her sil
ver hair was smoothed back from a fore
hetd that time had not spared from
wrinkles.
She looked up from the hook she was
read i uk with a bright smile.
"Off agniu, my dear,'' she said.
"Yes, grandma, it's another dance. 1
had t go. But it's so tiresome."
She sat down wearily, and gazed for
a moment absently into tho flickering
fire on the hearth. There was a brief
silence.
Then the old woman spoko again.
"My dear, you do not seem yourself

Her granddaughter looked up.
"Of tho past '' she said, with a sigh.
And then she said, as she rose and
gathered up her wrap:
"But, granny, you seem unusually
cheerful tonight. Of what, pray, are
yon thinking?"
And the old woman replied :
"My dear, I was thinking of the fu

. Iu the Boor war one of the columns,
half Canadian Hnd hjtlf . regular, under
General Iau Hamilton, became so no
torious for looting that tho soldiers
were . nicknamed ',The , Thousand
Thieves." General Hamilton review-ed
them one day in a small village near
Bloemfontein, says the New York
Times, for the purpose of warning
them pgiiinst any future depredations.
The column had just drawn up and
tvas wailing for Hamilton to begin the
review when a ragged rooster ran out
from a hut and across tho front of the
liue. A kind of shiver ran through the
volunteers. Suddenly a private left
the ranks and took after the rooster.
"Halt!" shouted Hamilton.
The soldier ran on. lie shortly over
took the rooster and turned back,
wringing tho neck of the fowl. As he
passed the general he noted the fierce
scowl on his face. The soldier was an
Irish boy from Toronto und not easily
daunted, but this time ho temporized.
Throwing the defunct rooster at tho
gener.d'tt feet, he said :
"There, now; I'll tache ye t' halt
when tho gineral says so!"
History records that the column
laughed and the gcnerul smiled. Also
that the soldier got only two days in
"quad" for one of tho most barefaced
breaches of disciplin in the records of
the most irregular corps 111 the army.
