Election News.
Municipal and fctate elections Mere
held in several states Tuesday, with
mixed results.
The contest in Greater New York re
sulted in a victory for the Tammany
candidate for mayor, George D. Mc
Olellan, Jr., son of the civil war genoral,
who defeated his Fusionist opponent,
Mayor el! Low, Iy over OU,ouo. The
main issue was gambling and open sa
loons on Sunday, and the "wido open"
element won.
Ohio rolls up a majority of 125,000 for
Jlerriek, Republican candidate for gov
ernor, whoso Democratic opponent was
' the famous Tom Johnson. There were
hirge Republican gains all over the
statu.
Beckham, Democrat, is re-elected
Kovortior of Kentucky by a majority ef
a bout 15,000. It was a hot day iu the
1 due Grass state, with heavy firing all
n long the line and a large number
killed and wounded.
Hates, Republican, is re-elected gov
ernor of Massachusetts by a margin of
.'lo.OOO, the rest of tiie state Republican
ticket also being elected.
lu New Jersey it was a legislative
contest, and the Republicans will have
h majority of 31 on joint ballot in the
next legislature.
Pennsylvania gives Mathus, the Re
publican candidato for State treasurer,
a plurality of about 205,000 with the
other candidates on the ticket close up.
Garvin, Democrat, is probably re
elected governor of Rhode Island, but
by a greatly reduord plurality. Latea
Garvin's plurality 1585. Republicans
control the legislature.
Colorado's election was for the pur
pose of selecting a member of the Su
preme Court, and Campbell, Repub
lican, won out with a margin of about
7,000.
Cummins, Republican, is re-olected
coventor of Iowa by a plurality of 50,
001), carrying the entire ticket with him.
Like Colorado, Nebraska's contest
was for Supreme Judge, Barnes, Rep
ublican, defeating Sullivan, Democrat,
by a margin of 8,000. Very good, by
the way, for Bryan's state.
Tho municipal election in San Fran-i-,co
resulted in tho re-election of
Mayor Schmitz. Union Labor candidato,
with Crocker, Republican, a good sec
ond, and Laue, Democrat, getting the
distance Hag. The other otllces were
divided among all parties.
Substantial Republican gains are
shown iu nil except the municipal
elect inns where party Hues were not
drawn. The result iH highly satisfac
tory striking an average.
William Jennings ftryan has been
raying some more naughty things about
Giover Cleveland, which seems to indi
cute that there are still two or more
wings to tho Democratic party; also
Hint both William and Grover are still
ambitious to be It.
1 f Oregon Las any honest men of
prominence or eminence, they should
.. he placid on exhibition at tho St. Louis
Tail- us soon us it opens. Just at pres
ent, it seems, all our 'way-up meu are
either mtiler indictment or under cus
puioii. In fact, tho editors of the state
iilniie stand on a level with the late la
mented wife of the lute lamented
t'.tsitr.
Some of our faint-heirted contem
poraries have decided that Yiiquinn

mutter of an appropriation. They
should bo calm. The tuilitr.i'v ceutle-

but let iiluak out iu tiny drops, so to
hpeak, and thus avoid producing a
dangerous elioek.
