THE DEVIL'S DREAM.
The devil sat in the editor's chair
The editor was awny
Watching the llood of the murmuring tide
As it rolled from Yaiiuina Bay.
And as he gazed on the beautiful scene
Ills. big heart was filled with glee,
For from the glint of its silvery sheen '
Cauie views of Futurity. ;
He naw in its bosom Toledo fair, , !
As she nestled iu the hills,
But none of her past was pictured there,
Xor none of her present ills.
No longer the rutrged and fern-clad height
Frowned on the valleys below;
No longer the scars.of the Fire Fiend's might
Told, mutely, their tales of woe.
Those hills are now covered with grasses grvoti
And dotted with grazing kine;
Fair vineyards and orchards thereon are seen
iubtoud of tuu fcUic!.U pine.
The highway's no longer au inclined plaiu,
The wicked boys' joy and pride,
Where sidewalks, plastered with mud and tain,
Afford them a place to slide.
Those ancient inclines are all torraccd now
With steps built of granite strong,
And christians no longer, with clouded brow.
Swear as they're slipping along.
Hut they walk erect, as the christian should,
With sober and stalely gait,
No longer wishing that old Herod could
Those youngster annihilate.
And the devil saw In the mirror bright,
Still another change take placo
Where pedestrians disappeared from sight
Down in Hill Btrcet mud's embrace.
Covered deep with stone is this thoroughfare,
With foundation of concrete hard,
Anil mansionsare easting their shadows where
Spreads a unooth, firm boulevard.
Big ships of all nations their cargoes bring
When the tide comes from -the sea,
And no longer the great iron horso is king
Now it's King I'rosperity.
i
And Toledo, queen of the vast domain
Caressed by the setting sun,
Rends out on the breeze o'er vale aud plain
A welcome to everyone!
