a proper act and the authorities de
serve credit for their promptness
and display of good sense. The
hysterical appeals for pardon and
leniency which came from senti
mental young things and unbal
anced old things were all properly
ignored, and any tough young man
who feels like following in the foot
steps of Wade and Dalton in Port
land will go into the business with
a full knowledge of what is in store
for him.
The socialists of Oregon will
hold their convention in Portland
March 19 and nominate a full state
ticket. This. will be a good thing
for the printer, should nothing else
of importance be accomplished, as
it will increase the size of the ballot
arid thereby make extra work,
which, of course, will cost more or
less.
Protestations of Friendship.
There is occaiion for Americans
to be amused. Incident to Prince
Henry's coming visit to this
country, all Kurope is indulging in
protestations of friendship. As if
recognizing the elevation of the
United States to the position of a
worl I Tower by the war with Spain,
European countries hasten to show
that during that conflict they each
prevented intervention. Reserv
ing n certain amount of credit for
France, M. Hanotaux declares that
Russia's declination to join a de
mand for a peaceful solution of the
difficulty wilheld Kurope from a
display of force against the United
States. As if realizing that such
credit given to Russia would not
comport with former representatious
made by the British Foreign office,
Lord Cranbourn, ICnglands under
secretary for foreign affairs, rises in
Parliment to explain that It was
Great Britain's refusal to join in
"subsequent proposals" proposals
tsubseduent to the joint note passed
by Lord Pauncefote to president Mc
Kinley which determined the
course of Europe. And so the pro
testations of friendship go merrily
on.
But there 19 one thing which
IJurope in protesting friendship
must look more carefully to, and
that is agreement in those little de
ttils regarding propositions to in
terfere during the Spanish-American
war. Either M. Hanotaux is right
and Lord Cranbourn is wrong, or
M. Hanotaux is wrong and Lord
Cranbourn is right. Trehaps neith
er is wholly right or wholly wrong.
It may be possible there are some
detail which will be much more
inteietitiug on this side of the At
lantic, and which will be disclosed
unless Kuropcuu nations get to
gether und agree on their story.
