IF WE KNEW.
Could we but draw back the curtains
Tlmt surround the people's iivea,
See the naked heart and spirit,
Know what spur the action gives,
Often we should find it better,
Purer than we judge we should ;
We should love each other better,
If we only understood.
Could we judge all deeds by motive,
Pee the good and bad within,
Often we should love the sinner,
All the while we loathe the sin.
Could we know the power working
To o'erthrow integrity,
We should judge each other's errors
With more patient charity.
If -e knew the cares and trials, .
Knew the effort all in vain,
And the bitter disappointnisut,
Understood the loss and gain,
Would the grim, external roughness,
Seem I vondr, just the same?
Should we help where now we hinder?
Should we pity where we blame?
Ah ! tve judge eaeh other harshly,
Knowing not life's hidden force;
Knowing not the fount of action
In less turbid at its source.
Seeing not amid the evil
All the goldoo grain of good ;
(Oh ! we'd love each other better
If .we only understood.

L .... ... .VA, : -Kyr,
The popular idea expressed in the
phrase, tue art of self-defense," shows
the opinion that the chief enemies a man
has to defend himself from are visible
and external. But the real danger of
every man is from minute and often in
visible foes. In the air we breathe and
the water we drink are countless minute
organisms leagued against the health of
the body.
The one defense against these enemies
is to keep the blood pure. Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery thoroughly
purifies the blood, removing poisonous
substances and accretions. When the
blood is pure there is no harborage for
the germs of disease which find a lodg
ing only when the blood is impure and
corrupt.
" I consider your 4 Golden Medical Discovery'
one of the best medicine! on tlie face of the
earth." writes Mr. Wni. Floeter, of Redoak,
Montgomery Co., Iowa. "While in the south-
West. Ihwc v-ir. ? j c. pIuJ win, j,,,,.
son ivy. The poison settled in luv blood and
the horrors I suffered cannot be told in words.
I thought I would (to crarv. I tried different
kinds of medicine, tried different doctors, but
all the relief thev could give me was to make my
Pocket-book lighter. I then began taking Dr.
ierce's Golden Medical Discovery. Took four
.bottles without relief. Kept taking it. I took
tn all ten bottles and got entirely cured."
Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets cure con
stipation. In the Telegram some weeks ago
there was a story giving the result
of a shipment by a Corvallis farmer
of ioo boxes of apples, the price
received being only $26, and after
freight, etc., was paid, the returns
were only $2. About 20 carloads
of apples have been shipped already
this season fiora Grants Pass, and
the orchadist received 40 cents, net,
for each box. The fruit buyers
contract from the farmer all his
choice fruit, and receive it in the
farmer's bam. The buyer supplied
skilled packers at his own expense,
also the boxes, and pnys the farmer
just as soon as the'fruit is packed.
Thus the farmer received for 100
boxes $40 net, instead of only $2,
as in the case reported, which is
quite a difference. Roseburg Plaiu-
