. The local Women of Woodcraft
brought their membership contest
to a close last Friday night, Mrs.
Arnold's team defeating Mrs. Hawk
ins by a good margin. The con
test added 42 new members to the
Circle. The losing sides in the
Circle and Camp will now combine
their energies, talents and loose
change and treaty the winners to a
banquet and entertainmeut New
Year's eve, December 31. Owing
to the large membership, the ex
pense will be rather heavy and the
seating capacity of the hall taxed
to practically its limit. For this
reason it will be necessary to make
the event 'strictly a membership
alair that is, open only to mem
bers and those who have recently
made application for membership.
County Clerk L,iitz issued a mar
riage license on the 15th inst. to
Mr. G. N. Pulse of Pedee and Miss
Maggie Barclay of Tidewater. The
applicant requested that the license
be made ''to take effect on the
19th." As we have heard no re
port to the contrary, we suppose it
took effect, and therefore extend
hearty congratulations.
Abe Lincoln W. R. C. No. 49
will hold its next meeting Thurs
day evening, Dec. 27, as the regular
date would be the 25th Christmas.
It is hoped all members will" be
present, as final arrangements will
be made for the proposed entertain-
t meni.
Lester Waugh returned last Fri
day evening from a busiuess trip to
Albany. He brought back some
up-to-date sausage machinery and
other equipments for his meat
market.
A rate of one fare for the round
trip has been made betweeu all
points' on the C. & E. Tickets good
going Dec. 22 to Jan." 1, inclusive,
returning on or before Jan. 2, 1901.

returning in the eveuing.

The weather for several days
past has been warm,but boisterous,
the old Pacific being very much
agitated. Today" the elements ap
pear to be getting sober agaiu.
Dr. S. S. Thayer and his big
brother William have been enjoying
(?) themselves at Otter Rock and
vicinity during the past few day?.
Ade Crosno and Al Caton are also
in there, building cabins.

Thursday morning, Dec. 20,1900,
at his home two and one-half miles
northwest of Toledo, E. Rhoades,
aged 56.
D.:. Ca.ter was summoned at an
early hour yesterday morning, but
when he arrived Mr. Rhoades was
dead. He had been subject to
heart trouble, and members of his
family believe death resulted from
excitement caused by the terrifio
windstorm which prevailed at that
time.
Mr. Rhoades was an old and
respected citizen. The funeral will
be held tomorrow (Saturday), with
interment iu Toledo cemetery.

Gust Forssell of Pioneer was
among the arrivals Wednesday
evening. Gust is a firm believer iu
printer's ink. Once upon a lime
he was proprietor of a valuable old
sow, and one day the animal
"turned up missing." Gust search
ed for her for a week and then
hiked to a newspaper office and ad
vertised his loss. The very day
the paper was issued her porcine
highness came home. On a recent
visit to Toledo Gust inserted an
advertisement in The Leader set
ting forth the fact that he was
offering for sale a cream separator
and several fine milch cows. When
he reached home he found the sep
arator had been sold before the
paper containing the ad was circu
lated, and the cows would have
