The Oregonian fittingly observed
its 50th birthday by issuing a mam
moth illustrated number devoted to
its own past history and that of the
city of Portland and the eminent
pioneers of the state. The Oregon
ian had its ups and downs princi

if Editor Scott doesn't habitually

went to procure salmon eggs to
place in the Siiisbw hatchery, iu

1,250,000 eggs from the waters of
the Little White salmon to Ya

be transported to the Jiuslaw hatch
jcry. This hatchery has a capacity
(of 3,000,600 eggs, but for a time
past has been under-stocked. Pres
ent indications are that with the
recent addition cf egs from the
Little Salmon hatchery, the prob
able output this year will be 2,000,-

FALL CREEK ITEMS.
The people here seem to be satis
fied with the election of McKinley,
though we have had some pretty
cold days for the democrats to be
left out. One man over here voted
for Woolley. He must be crazy to
think we can run this government
without whisky, when we cannot
run a little one-horse town without
two or three saloons... Oscar Tom
had a shooting match for turkeys
November 24 and gave a free din
ner with a big fat roasted turkey
gobbler on the table. We all en
joyed it. Dock has some very fine
turkeys. ..Dan Pickett's blacksmith
and wagon shop is in full blast.
We wish him success, as he is a
good workman . . . The Trenholm
boys are baching on the home
place. Their folks have moved to
the McRay place ... A. J. Oglesby
is baching this winter. His folks
are out to Alsea at school. Mr.
Oglesby has rheumatism in his feet
and hands, which makes cooking a
very difficut. . .The Cams boys are
visiting at Alsea.
