this man bullet-proof.
Scotch Soldier's l.xperlence in the
Battle of Atbara.
A letter written by Corporal Laurie
of the Seaforth Highlanders to his sis
ter, describing the battle of Atbara,
says: "I suppose you have seen me re
ported as slightly wounded and pic
tured me as an Interesting invalid.
Well, I was struck, but the effect was
so small that I have often bwn worse
hurt in a foot-ball match. But during
the rest of the day and for some days
afterward I have been an object of in
terest, and have been questioned by al
most every officer and man In the bat
talion, referred to as the 'bullet-proof
man,' and asked if I would mind letting
a section (ire a few rounds at me to see
If they could do me any harm. The
fact is that got most of the corners
of my clothing shot off, while person
ally I was uninjured.
"Before I entered the zeraba I wa
not struck, but shortly afterward a
bullet took off the toe of my left shoe
without hitting my foot, the shoe being
a sine too big, for easy marching and
sleeping at night. Then my bayonet
was struck and bent over at a right
angle. Then a shot went through my
sleeve, near my left wrist, tearing two
holes, but not hurting myself. Then my
rifle was struck while I was loading,
the bullet splintering the butt and be
ing stopped by an iron bolt which It
met. This bullet would certainly have
gone right Into my body but for my rifle
being there. Then a nigger In a trench
let drive at me with a spear, missed
my ribs by on inch and slit up my
imv eiBitcK. a. uuuei wieu Kiazeii uie
back of my hand just enough to make
It bleed.
"When I reached the river bank,
' which was nearly perpendicular, a shot
came from the bottom, about twenty
feet below and a little to the left,
which caused the wound I am supposed
to have got, and wns so curious that I
was paraded before the General. It en
tered through the lid of my right am
munition pouch, which was open; went
Into my right coat pocket, smashing a
penknife and two pencils, tore four
holes In my shirt, made a surface
wound two or three Inches long on my
left breast, and came out near my left
shoulder through my coat and ammu
nition pouch braced.
"In the afternoon I strolled over to
the field hospital and got a piece of
dressing on Hiul It has never troubled
me at all; in fact, It was a farce to put
It In as a wound, and was done with
out my knowledge by the color ser
geant. So you see I've really been, as
I'm told by everybody, wonderfully
lucky In getting off ns I have done,
while other poor clinps were given no
chances." Scotsman.
CAT MADE A NIGHT OF IT.
How a Black Feline I earned to Re

When a young man who lives near

the other jnornlng his face in its per

passed a sleepless night. In fact, he
had spent a considerable portion of
the hours which are supposed to be
passed in pleasant dreams trying to re
move a sticky tly-paper mixture from
the caudal appcudage of his particular
pet a large ami handsome black cat.
The possibilities are that neither the
young mau nor the cat will ever forget
the experience. The drama opened
about I) o'clock at night. While prowl

cat's tall, a loud growl as It touched
and clung to the tly paper. Then there
was pandemonium for tifteen minutes.
The paper terrltled the cat. He tried
to rid himself of It by rolling, and iuulo
it stick tighter. The cat hissed, spit
and uttered blood-curdling shrieks, lie

The youngest of the family was asleep.
She awakened In terror as the cat rush

the paper on her face.
Into the next room rushed the cat

Why Certain Mentis Cannot Be Cast.
As is well known, some metals are
unsuitable for casting, while others,
like iron, can readily be cast in any
desired shape. The property of casting
well is said to depend upon whether
the metal contracts or expands on so
lidifying from the liquid form. Iron,
like water, expands in solidifying, and
hence the solid metal may be seen
floating in the liquid iron about it.
Gold and silver contract in cooling,
