thai is no surprise. Neither is the
fact that his speech of acceptance
contains 10,000 words.
The situation in China appears
to be very serious. The allied forces
are marching toward Pekin and
some hard fights have occurred.

the relief of the legations will meet
with great loss, even if successful.
The cigarette beetle is a new pest
' (?) 'in some parts of the country. It
finds its way into boxes of cigar
ettes, drills holes through the paper
wrappers of the little "coffin screws"
and devours the contents. Poor

The populist nominee for vice

sota, has declined to accept the
nomination. Mis decision causes no
surprise. He could not be elected,

race. The silver republicans and
populists are now at liberty to
.whonp it up for Adlai.
North Carolina and Alabama,
two states that are solidly for Bryan,
have held their elections and de
. dared in favor of disfranchising
the illiterate negro. It is now time
for Mr. Bryan to make another of
his heart-searching speeches about
"the consent of the governed."
The "niggers" are considered gooil
.enough to count as "population"
, and swell the representation of
those states in congress, but they
are not wanted in politics for any
.other purpose. North Carolina and
Alabama.are safely democratic witli
, out their votes, and there ore not
nearly ollices enough for the am
, bitious white men.
Bryan insisted that the 16 to i
plank should be in the democratic
platform adopted at Kansas City
in fact, sud he would refuse the
nomination if it wasn't put there.
Today Bry.in and his co-stumpers,
echoed by the Bryanatic press, are
frantically trying to make the dear
people understand that "impeii.il-
ism" is "the paramount issue." If
this is true, why did Bryan insist
upon io to i, against, the advice
smd entreaties oi many democratic
lcadeis, as the price of his accept
ance oi the nomination? That game
is too gauy. Having succeeded
in gating his 16 to i hobby in the
plat foi in, Bryan is now willing that
it should be considered a minor
issue. But a minor issue it can
never be. Bryan's frenzied demand
ior it prior to the convention cannot
be forgotten. He was beaten on
that issue in 1S96, and the same
reasons exist for beating him in
1900. The Ameiican people can
be relied upon to do the job thor
oughly. They cannot be fooled.
The 16 to 1 idea is in the detnocatie
fMatfoim, a ml whether it be consid
ered the tail or the whole hide, it
must go. The people will have a
pice in this "paramount" business.
