While full particulars of the Re
publican national convention have
not yet been received, it is known
that Colonel "Teddy" Roosevelt,
who needs no introduction, has
been chosen as the running mate of
William McKinley. This action
was undoubtedly against the de
sire of Mr. Roosevelt, but the con
vention was practically unanimous
for him and refused to take "No"
for an answer. A stronger combi
nation than McKinley and Roose
velt could not have been found.
Oregon will give them a majority
of about 20,000.
Exports from the United States
to Cuba, Porto Rico,. Hawaii, the
Philippins and Samoan Islands will
reach $45,000,000 in trie fiscal year
ending with this month, being three
times larger than in 1S96. This is
good expansion.

Butter was worth only 14 cents a
pound in the New York market in
1896, and cheese, 7 cents. Last
year, on the same date, July 1, but
ter was worth 17 cents, and
cheese; 84 cents. Factories were
busy, people bad money to spend,
and could afford to buy butter and
cheese last year. ' In 1896 they
couldn't.
There were 159 furnaces in blast
in the United States in 1896 and
2S9 last year. The increase of
nearly 100 per cent in the number
in blast during the Republican Ad
ministration meant an increase of
at least 100 per cent in the employ
ment of labor. The furnaces were
all running full time last year, and
only part time in '96.

great campatgn of 1900?
Away off in the grand northwest
lies a state from whoes shores have
lately gone thousands of American
soldiers far across the ocean to cam-
to distant lands the flag of Liberty.
As these brave boys left her shores
Oregon bade them God speed on
their mission, and as long as they
could see the mountains of their
native land, on its highest cliffs
they saw the sturdy sons of that
western state waving the banner of
Freedom to them the harbinger of
victory.
The cause those American sol
diers sailed away to defend was
made an issue of the campaign in
the state of Oregon, and every com
bination possible every aid that dis
content, false isms and impractic
able theories could assemble were
called upon to help defeat the Re
publican party. The chief apostle
of national dishonor and. a dis
credited currency was called upon,
and he visited Oregon to endeavor
to teach the pioneers a new patrio
tism, which ignored tlif viWies of
American soldiers - and advocated
the hauling down of the starry, em
blem of liberty, enlightenment and
civilization.
The men of Oregon listened, then
turned to the great ocean, across
whose bosom not long since they
had sent their sons, and its waves
sang them the song of a greater re
public, a laud of the brave and the
free, whose fhig is to float wherever
American blood has been shed the
emblem of a free and happy people.
Then they went to the ballot-box
and answered the smooth-tougued
prophet of calamity and repudia
tion. Have you heard from Oregon? Its
people have spoken, and in thunder
tones their voices are reverberating
from ocean to ocean, from the pine
forests of Maine to the mountains
and deserts of Arizona. Across the
great Pacific the foot-sore volunteer
hears the shout, and his eyes
brighten as he listens.
Stop as you read, and amid the
sound of marching phalanxes you
can bear Oregon voices chanting
the grand words of Joseph Rodman
Blake, again the battle song of the
grand old Republican party:
Flag of the freo heart's hope and home,
