The Philosopher sat, as usual, in
the sunny corner where the sea
lreezedid not make itself too evi
dent, and the Satellites occupied
the various planks and railings
round about, each one in the posi
tion that habit and many sunny
mornings had accustomed him to.
No fear in this climate of a day's
"shake" being the penalty for an
hour's sunning.
Election was over and the Philos
opher had just finished telling the
Satellites why he "knew the result
would be as it was," that he had
"foreseen just how it would be, as
as soon as the nominations were
made," regardless of the fact that
only about one-eleventh of his pre
dictions on sunny mornings previ
ous to election had been fulfilled.
Something to hold the interest of
his audience was needed badly,
and as the Philosopher is never at
a loss for material for a short-order
free-for-all lecture, he gazed pen
sively at Satellite No. 3, and said:
"Did you ever notice how easy it
is to read not only a man's charac
ter, but his trade or occupation,
from the shape and carriage of his
back and shoulders? Now, take
the lazy man's back: one glimpse
is enough (here the Sat's all man
aged to face each other quite
squarely). It is rather broad, and
the shoulders are bent somewhat
I forward, just with the burden of
their own weight. The head, too,
droops slightly forward, which
gives a more rouud-shonldered ap
pearance than is really true. The
coat is always a frock, and always
shiny across the rather fleshy
shoulder blades.
"Then, there is the crank's back:
it is straight enough, usually is
somewhat hollow between the
shoulders, and of these latter the
left one is always a little higher
than the right nil cranks are made
like that, you know.
"You can tell the successful
farmer from the unsuccessful just
from the back alone, including the
back of the head. The former is
broader and squarer-shouldered,
with no taper at the waist, while
the latter seems to have been
whittled away a little at each side
just below the shoulder blades and
the whole appearance of his back
seems tosay: 'I don't know whether
I will plant my potatoes this week
or next; and what is the use of
mending that fence, the cattle may
break it down again?'
"Then, again, you can easily see
the difference between the shoul

swings the big hammer in a
blacksmith' shop, or the shoulders
ihat are raised not rounded by sit-
ting all clay at a desk; and from the
carriage of the shoulders the back
gets its individuality. Take it right
through, it is the square-shouldered,
assertive-elbowed man who
gets the jam to go with his bread
and butter."
The Philosopher gazed iefiect
ively over the heads of the Satellites
and a far-off look grew in Lis eyes, i
as if he saw a long procession of
backs filing away in the distance,
each one giving him its life story as
it passed. Just then a man whom
they all knew passed the group,
and they eyed him closely for proof
of the Philosopher's words. Satel
lite No. 4 said: "Now you men
tion it, I can see all that fellow's
trials on his back, and more than
that, his triumphs too, and it is
the hardest thing to describe I ever
tried my tongue at, but surely you
can all see it." (
The Philosopher said: "You
never could fail in reading a back
when once you had a key to tl
system."
Then, as the shadow of the wart
house fell across the sunny corner,
he added that it was about time to
bring that session to a close; and 2s
he walked slowly away, there Ml
from the mouths of the seven Satel
lites, fourteen different readings of
the Philosopher's back, and th ;y
were all more or less correct, tro;
but, then, you will always notice
that peculiarity of Philosophe s'
backs when you get a key to t he
svstem.
