A large audience was present at
the courthouse last Friday night to
listen to the remarks of J. D. Lee
of Salem and WallisNash of Nash
ville, this county. Mr. Lee is a
logical reasoner, easy to follow, and
made a good impression. Mr.
Nash, being a recent convert to re
publicanism, received close atten
tion. His argument was clear and
forceful on every poi.it touched
upon. In him the administration
has an able and earnest champion,
and his remarks upon expanstou
and "imperialism" were appre
ciated. He also made a nice little
talk in favet of the equal suffrage
amendment, and it is worthy of note
that the amendment carried in this
precinct by a good majority, in the
face of violeut and eloquent opposi

Fred Thayer, who has been at
tending the state university at Eu
gene, arrived Sunday to spend the
summer with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. 12. Thayer, and Dr. S. S.
Thayer, his brother. Another
brother, Charlie, arrived Monday
from his home at The Dalles. The
family, with the exception of the
doctor, are now enjoying an outing
at Otter Rock, accompanied by
Prof, and Mrs. R. F. Holm.
VV. H. Buoy has purchased of If.
F. Fischer of Corvallis a complete
V-iy outfit, consisting ol a No. 2
De Lavel separator, 40-gallon box
churn, butter worker, Babcock
tester, etc. .The outfit will arrive
early next week and the Buoy dairy
begin to figure in the business of
Lincoln county.
The Leader is delayed this
week by an attempt to secure offi
cial returns of the election in this
county. The majorities in the table
on this page are correct, but the
vote by precincts is not.
George Landreth has treated his
mv barber shop to a handsome
awning. When the interior work
is completed it will be one of the
handsomest places of the kind 1n
the state.

Scott Bozorth, traveling repre
sentative of the Pacific Homestead,

Henry Lewis store building a fresh
coat of paint this week, which adds
much to its appearance.
Mrs. C.,G. Copeland came over
from Siletz Wednesday and de
parted next morning on a business
trip to Portland.
Harry Walden, traveling freight
and passenger agent of the C. &E.,
was down at this end of the line
Wednesday night.
Lester Waugh departed this morn
ing on a cattle-buying expedition
up in the Big Elk county.
James Anderson, the, blacksmith,
has been very sick for several days
past, but is improving.
D. J. Derby was in Toledo Mon
day with a cargo of fine straw
berries. Mrs. Claude Jones of Yaquina
was a Toledo visitor Wednesday.

Mrs. James McNeil and children
left Wednesday moniing fur a visit
with relatives at Siiverton, this
state. They expect to be absent a
month.
The Ladies Aid society will meet
with Mrs. F. M. Wadsworth, Tues
day, June 12. An earnest request
is made to all members to he there,
as the society wishes to. order ma
terial for the fair. Boats will be at
the landing promptly at 1:30 p. m. to
convey all membeis across the bay.
Mrs. Eva Shakspeare of Liver
pool, England, arrived Wednesday
evening and was met at the depot
by her sister, Mrs- Moses Gregson.
As stated in The Leader' recently
in a mention of the expected ar
rival of Mrs. Shakspeare, the sisters
have been separated foi forty years.
Fred Bailey and family came up
from Oyster City yesterday after
noon to participate in the reunion,
Mr Bailey being a brother of Mrs.
Sliakspere, and not having seen her
for thirty-five years. Mrs. Shak
spear made the trip from Liverpool
to Toledo in fourteen days, losing
a day at Portland. Our citizens
will give her a hearty welcome to
her new home and country.
WT. E. Ball of Morris precinct
rode in with Sheriff Ross Tuesday
evening in charge of the ballot-box.
He returned to h'.s home yesterday,
after having his name placed on
The Leader list. Morris, by-the
way, is one of the biggest little
voting precincts on the coast.
U. S. Grant, Johnny Brown,
Tom Jackson in fact, almost every
body was over from Siletz Tuesday
after election news. They didn't
carry home any better news than
they brought over.

Mrs. Lester Dobson of Yaquina
is up on business today.
The Ladies Aid society served
ice cream and cake in Toledo on
election day. The alwavs nooular
refreshments were appreciated, but
in numerous cases were followed by
disaster. Many of the partakers,
especially the children, became very
ill, and the local physicians were
kept pretty busy that night and
made many calls during the follow
ing twenty-four hours. Some of
the cases were quite serious, but
all recovered. No blame is attached
to the society, and it is the general
opinion that the trouble was caused
by the poisonous nature of some of
the flavoring extracts used in the
icecream. The local dealers are in
no way to blame for that, but it
would be a wise plan to place sam-
pies of the extracts used in the
hands of a chemist, and this will
-i prooaoiy be done. The Leader
is familiar with two other cases of
;,; this nature, and in both the cause
was charged to poisonous flavoring
extracts by reputable physicians.
The members of The Ladies' Aid
society deeply . regret the result of
their effort to liquidate the debt
against the church buildings, but
are very thankful that it was 110
worse.
E. G. Sharratt of Portland ar
rived in Lincoln county on the 3d
day of last September and was ten
derly conveyed, by easy stages, to
the Drift creek country, near Lin
ville postoffice. Mr. Sharratt was
at that time a very sick man, with
the chances away against him, and
he weighed but 98 pounds Yes
terday, June 7, he came to Toledo.
He tips the beam at 150 pounds,
and doesn't look a little bit like a
man who has been near death's
door. Naturally, he is very enthu
siastic over the result, and "The
mountains of Lincoln county. Or
egon, against the world!" is now
his favorite declaration. Mr. Shar
ratt went to Albany this morninc
for a brief visit, after which he wiil
return to his little paradise on Drift
