ELK CITY ITEMS.
Miss Clara Crawford arrived from the
valley the last of the week.
Dr. Carter's family has come in from
Philomath to spend the summer.
Cascara bark is coming in. Mays is
paying $2.50 per 100 pounds for it.
Fred "Wittenstrom is running the
quarry for Geo. VV. Davis at Morrison.
Last heard from M. W. Simpson and
Arthur Rochester they were hunting
bee trees.
Geo. W. Banfroft went to Fortland
this morning. lie left the quarry under
the management of J. C. Dixon.
A. Rae returned from Portland the
first of the week, where he has been at
tending the Advent camp-meeting.
The posters for the candidates, dance
at this place on May 28 resulted in an
other one of those joyous tiniesthat
make the people who failed to attend
feel that they missed a treat. We were
informed on the morning of the 28th
that a special train would be run from
Yaquina to Elk City to bring the dancers
and candidates, but later we thought,
from what we could hear, that it was a
mistake. But in the evening, while the
people and candidates were gathering in
from the neighboring hills and valleys,
news came over the wire that the people
of Toledo had taken an interest in the
affair, and informed us they were com
ing. We knew without asking further
questions what that would bring, and
commenced to prepare for a Toledo turn
out and arrange to make them welcome.
Rufe said it was no use to try to catch
trout to feed them, so commenced to
give thanks and prepare to break bread.
We soon heard the whistle of the com
ing train- It soon made its appearance
and above its noise arose sounds that
made us know Toledo had arrived Can
didate McDonald said his bees had
swarmed, and started after the smoker.
Dr. Carter said "Why! Why!" A. B.
Clark commenced to prepare an oration.
Joe Gideon asked Elmo Davis if he sup
posed they would believe the pig story
that Troy Mays was telling on him.
Candidate Ross, with his hair parted in
the middle, landed at the statiou with
six partners, followed by Landis, Liitz
and Wadsworth. . We soon found danc
ing room was too small in the hall, and
Dr. Carter offered his store building.
Rosebrook's hand was soon in position
there, and dancers were informed that
numbers were good in either hall. Two
dances at the same time and town, and
no opposition. From midnight till 3:30
a. m. R. F. Simpson and his army of
cooks were trying to make the doubtful
crowd believe he could feed them all be
fore daylight. Remarks like "We will
never get anything to oat," etc., could
be heard from hungry-looking people.
but after over one hundred and sixty
had beeu fed the last one came out with
a smile and remarked : "There's plenty
left yet." We can't say how many votes

Warren.

The Rev. Dawson will hold ser
vices Sunday, June 3, morning and

Our first strawberries this year
were brought in by Mr. Derby, May
19. Since then they have been
plentiful.
