.r. ' I , ; . 4 4W . . IM0M Volume VIII. Toledo, Lincoln County, Oregon, Friday, June 1, 1900. Number 1?, iff. ma i W T f AT t m T!i-ttt Agreeable weather and a good turn out marked Decoration day in Toledo. In the forenoon the procession went to the Toledo cemetery according to pro gram and performed the ever-beautiful ceremony of decorating the graves of the nation's dead. Abe Lincoln Relief Corps conducted the impressive burial service for the unknown dead, the old veterans tenderly placed their floral tributes upon the -mound, followed by nearly every one present. Here and there a little flag marked the last rest ing place of a soldier, and soon the mounds were thickly covered with flow ers Oregon flowers the prettiest in the in the world. The decorating ended, the assemblage paused at the cemetery gate and sang the dear old national an them, "America." In the afternoon the members of G. A. K., W. R. C. and Miss Sumner'-s pupils formed a procession and inarched to the courthouse. They made a pleasing and patriotic appearance, but about a hundred more school children who might have been added to the pro cession would have made it more so. The circuit court room, however, was filled to overflowing. The prayer by Chaplain Carter of Abe Lincoln Post was followed by music by a choir com posed of Mesdames Swope and Bethers, Misses Sumner and Thompson and Messrs. Ross and Gaither, with Mrs. Fred Stanton us organist. The several selections by the choir were thoroughly appreciated. Mrs. U. H. Young and Miss Mamie Wakefield gave appropriate recitations, in a very creditable manner. The oration by Attorney B. F. Swope was a splendid effort and won many words of praise. His tribute to the nation's defenders was of unusual merit and thoroughly appreciated by the vet erans. Mr. Swope has thus paved the fAy'y for a lot of trouble for himself, for r Tie will hereafter encounter a brisk de mand for his presence on public occa sions. Memorial day was fittingly observed in Toledo. : ----- Farmers Attention!
