been visiting in the Valley, returned
Tuesday evening to his home.
Mrs. Ed Sullivan was on Mon
day's train outward, presumably

Messrs. Collins and Geo. Burch
of Newport spent Saturday in our
city disposing of about a hundred
pounds of flounder.
Mrs. Wbiteford an aunt of Mrs.
T. P. Fish, arrived from Portland
Tuesday evening to spend a short
time with her niece at Toledo, near
tne Pacific.
Mrs. Kyniston and her daughter
arrived from Halsey Saturday.
She was there attending upon the
last sickness of her mother who re
cently died.
Miss Flora Strayer came from
Elk City Tuesday to take her ex
amination preparatory to teaching
the school at that place during the
summer term.
J. A. Hall and wife are selling
their household effects pteparatory
to leaving this place about the
middle of June. Mrs. H. will go
East and Al. will remain in Port
land for a time, at least before join
ing her. Toledo people will sin
cerely regret their departure know
ing their places will be hard to fill.

Saving Service declares that its effi
ciency is chiefly due to the fact that
fitness and merit have always gov
erned the selection of its agents.
On the other hand, it is clear that
place-seekers shrink from entering
a department where achievement
and heroism are the rule. Even
the thought of pay-day is not allur
ing enough to bring assent to the
endurance of hardship and peril.
Thus the merit system has an easier
opportunity to exercise its benefi
cial influence among the life-savers
than in some safer spheres of the
public service. It is none the less
creditable to the government that
spoilsmen are not allowed to use the
Life-Saving Bureau for political

beach mining which is being used
now along our Lincoln county
beach. Ade Crosno and his part

the Jones & Crosno claims near Ot
ter Rock and are doing nicely.
Later we will be able to tell our
readers more definitely what the.
results prove to be. Hundreds of
dollars have been taken from the
beach mines each year recently and
by this method ' these hundreds
should be thousands. The boys
are much pleased with their pro
spect for the summer and their
friends wish them success.
