Come think of it, did you ever
know a President who made more
satisfactory appointments than
President McKinley?
President McKinley has given
Ex-Gov. Lord the appointment of
Minister to Persia. A western
man is a pleasant surprise to t he

appoint, should he accept, with
ability.

ENGINEERS HERE.
An Earlier Visit
Delegates From All Valley Towns
Present.
The Board of engineers appointed by President
McKinley to investigate and report upon the feasibili
ty of further improvements at Yaquina bar areat New
port today. A special, bearing delegates from all im
portant Valley points, passed through at ii o'clock
Their purpose is fo shovv to t lie board the great im
portance to all of Oregon ot these improvements. Our
people believe that the board, after a personal know
ledge of the situation and its importance cannot well re
port otherwise than favorably upon the present pro
ject. When the facts are before the board and only a
just presentation of benefits sure to follow the comple
tion of this work our people are satisfied the result will
be right.
Words of highest oraise have been spoken of
these engineers and their abilities by all who know
them and Tim Leader firmly believes their report
will be a favorable one that they will see things simp
ly as they ore and do Yaquir.a bar justice. Being sat
isfied that their report will lie favorable. Tiib J.kad- &
UK, in behalf of its readers, extends to them its sincere I
thanks. A full report of proceedings next week

Takes Action.
SAN FRANCISCO, April iS.
At a meeting of the chamber of
commerce today the improvements
needed to make the harbor of Ya
quina safe were discussed. The
local board of trade will join with
the chamber of commerce in urging
the government to make an appro
priation sufficient to cover tha cost
ol the improvements desired, and
urging that the work be commenced
without delay. If the harbor is
improved as desired, a line ot steam
ers will be put on between this city
and Yaquina.
Toledo Public School.
Last Friday the primary and in
termediate departments joined the
7th and Sth grade pupils in their
literary program, and assisted in
entertaining a large number of vis
itors, who we are very grateful to
for their kind attention and words
of encouragement. The seventh
grade pupils will have a debate
next literary day, April 28th. The
question is, resolved; that the water
contains more wonders than the
land. As our school room will look
by that time we will expect all who
are interested in our work to come
and see us. Eight large pictures
of prominent men men with bunt
ing draped over and between
them decorate the walls, and new 1
scrim curtains hang at the windows.
The average attendance for last!
week in the seventh and eight j
grades was 29, per cent present 92, j
per cent not tardy 94. There are ;
now forty pupils in the primary de-j
partment, one of the new ones be
ing Stella Gannon.

The school is about back to its
normal condition again, and the
whoop is not heard as often as in
the past.

has been assigned to fill the posi

ordered to report for duty forth
with. Hoffman & Mecket, will soon
arrive and the construction of the
hospital will begin immediately.
It will be an up to date building in
every particular, and furnished in
modern style.
The dwelling heretofore occupied
by Scott Lane, has been moved to
a suitable site, and hencefourth the
Court of Indian Offences will hold
monthly sessions therein.
Agent Buford is having new
fences built and a general cleaning
up all around. He believes in pro
gression and expansion.
Brown Arden is sawing the lum

oy clerk Knightlinger.
Father Bucher, has had extensive
improvements made in and around
his neat church, and have more in
contemplation.
Dr. Turner returned from his
trip east Mondaay evening. He
reports a pleasant time.
T. U. Tutana.
Dr. Townsend and his family
passed through this place Thurs
day morning enroute from New
port to Roseburg, his new home.
Miss Graham, his wife's sister, who
has been making her home with
the family during the past winter,
accompanied them. Newport peo
ple will greatly regret their depart
ure, as the Dr. found a warm spot
in every heart with which he came
in contact in church or on the street
as he will do wherever his lot is
cast. Roseburg is fortunate in
having secured Dr. Townsend and
his family as citizens.
