The Infallable ilan.
S. E. Kisor In Chicago News
There was a man who never made.
A blunder in his life;
He loved a girl, but he was afraid
If she became his wife
That he or she might rue the day
That brought them bliss, and so
He put the happiness away
That wedded lovers know.
One day the man who never made
Mistakes perceived the way
That led to fame, but, still afraid,
Drew back and stole away;
He shunned the winding paths that led
To distant, unseen ends,
And kept the road that stretched ahead
With neither steeps nor bends.
At last the man who never made
Mistakes foil by thi wnv;
In garments that were badly frayed,
And pale and starved he lay;
No weeping friend bent o'er him there,
Noi servant, nor child, nor wife,
But victory was his he ne'er
Had blundered in his life.

Death ot Daniel Murphy.
A dispatch late yesterday after
noon to Dr. N.B. Avery announces
the death of Daniel Murphy, well
known in Corvallis. The telegram
mentioned no details, merely, stat
ing, "will start early in the morn
ing with the corpse of Dan Mur
phy." Mr. Murphy had been ail
ind for several months. He was
about 68 years of age and was a
veteran of the Civil war. He has
resided for the last 25 years in Ben
ton county. The funeral will pro
bably ojcur from the residence of
Dr. N. B. Avery on Sunday. The
interment will be in the Masonic
cemetery. Times'.
Dr. N. B. Avery spent Tuesday
in this place looking after the busi
ness of Mr. Murphy and was ap
pointed his administrator. Lincoln

Murphy, whose many friends deep

Lincoln County, Oregon,
Most wretched relics of Spain's
misrule in the Philippines are the
Spanish prisoners held by the in
surgents. Emaciated, cruelly
beaten and starved, these miserable
creatures represent in their broken
bodies the inquiries of a past rule
reflected with savage fidelity to de
tail. The fact that Aguinaldo
holds these soldiers in bondage, in
defiance alike of hnmanity and in
ternational law, is sufficient answer
to the voluble appeals of certain
Americans in behalf of the "liber
ties" of the Filipinos, looking to
self-government. Oregonian.

Fred Hesseman, an employe of
the Santiam Lumber Co., was seri
ously injured near Berry yesterday
morning. He rode from Berry to
the mill switch, a few hundied
yards up the road, and attempted
to alight from the moving train.
Ele struck the end of a tie with
great force, tearing a great hole in
his left side and breaking the hip
bone. He was brought to Albany
last night and lies in a very critical
condition at Flemming's boarding
boarding house. He bled intern
ally during the afternoon and even
ing and is probably injured intern
ally. Albany Herald.
