In regard to Yaquina, he said to an Oiegonian reporter: "Much de pends on the report the board of engineers make to the next con- jgress. The act of 1896 authorized j the secretary of war to let contracts for the completion of these jetties, placing the cost at $1,000,000, but no appropriation was ever made to meet the expense. The previous secretary of war proceeded to adver tise for bids, and the contract was let to Christy, Lowe & Hay worth, of Chicago, at $511,000. Before this contract was signed, the chair man of the river and harbor com mittee requested the secretary of war to wait until congress' had acted on a bill repealing the act. There is strong opposition to the prosecution of the work, from sources I have not been able to discover, though I do not think it comes from the transcontinental railroads, as has been reported. The impression that $1,000,000 had actually been appropriated for Ya quina bay is an erroneous one. All br-"r Zee Salmon News Chas.
