"Why Women
Sleep. '
The highly organized,
finely-strung nervous
system of women sub
jects them to terrors of nervous apprehen
sion which no man can ever appreciate.
The peace of mind, the menial poise and
calmness under difficulties, which is neces
sary for happy womanhood is only possible
when the sensitive feminine organism is in
a perfectly healthy condition. If there be
any weakness or derangement in this re
spect no remedy in the world so com
pletely restores womanly health, nervous
vigor and capability as the wonderful
"Favorite Prescription" invented by Dr.
R. V. Pierce, chief consulting physician of
the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute
of Buffalo, N. Y. It purifies, heals and
strengthens; insures functional regularity;
provides physical reinforcement and sus
taining power at periods of special weak
ness and nVrireo;r,tj.
It is the only medicine which makes
the coming of baby safe and comparatively
easy. In a personal letter to Dr. Pierce,
Mrs. Marguerite Collin, of Cutler, Algoma
Co., Ont, says:
"I was a sufferer and was cured by Dr.
Pierce's wonderful medirine. When I com
menced the medicine I could neither eat nor
sleep. My hands and feet were constantly cold:
I had a wasting, troublesome drain for three
months, 'Xud my monthly periods were never
regular. I took Dr. Pierce's Fnvorite Prescrip
tion and it cured me. I feel well: I thank the
World's Dispensary Medical Association."

EDITORIAL..
But few people would kick at the
weather this week.
We are glad to so many news
correspondents appear. Their items
always assist in making a live
paper.
.
The clerk hire of the committees
of the house was $206 per day dur
ing the extra Se.viuii. The senate
committee clerks received $3,683 or
over $184 per day. Clerks for the
legislature at $390 per day we sup
pose are necessary, but much work
can be done for that money.
The wife of our governor-elect
died very suddenly at Omaha last
week Thursday night. The re
mains were brought to Salem and
interred at Macleay Sunday. Mr.
Geer's many friends in this vicinity
will sincerely sympathise with him
in his loss of a loyal wife and loving
mother.
Five thousand cases ot salmon
could have been put up in a can
nery situated here this year just as
well as not. Several thousand
dollars could have been distributed
among our fishermen and a neat
little margin would have been left
for the cannery. Toledo people
should erect and equip such a can
nery and to the fish department add
irun canning macninery.
Siirli a
combination at Toledo would prove
a financial success.
In other columns will, be found
two communications, one from Mr.
Zeigler at Kernville, and one from
Jack Allphin of this place. The
former does not seem to think
Toledo ought to work for roads
leading to her streets and business
louses but ought to assist other
places. Toledo finds no fault with
Kernville for building a road to
Newport. That is their business.
To look out and build one to Toledo
is our business, and both should be;0resrm has been eliminated, and
heartily endorsed by all Kernville
people. There is also a wav to
secure the county aid and legal
tender so short in Kernville. Mr.
Aliphin speaks of his democratic
principles in no misleading man
ner, using very forceful English,
but that is Jack's well known way.
He wants no misunderstanding.
The Eugene Guatd upholds Gov.
Tanner for not sending troops to
protect miners at Virden and says
further: "If other governors had
used the same method in dealing
with labor troubles, loss of life
would have been averted and present
relations between employer and
employe would be more satisfac
tory." es, all white
miners
would be killed, then relations
would be more quiet and peaceful.
Because Gov. Tanner refused to
send aid, there are eight more
homes despondent and ten where
pain and discouragement sit above
i the mantel. No matter whether
' the mine-owneTS or the miners were
wrong. Gov. Tanner was surely
wrong in not being there to piotect
life when fully notified that trouble
j would ensue. In all these labor
. troubles no one knows who will fire
( the first shot and that governor is
j wrong who fails to respond wheu
asked and fully warned of what is
' to come to pass. So it looks to us.
Oregon Hemp.
One of the least attractive but
nevertheless most interesting and
valuable exhibits of Oregon's natur
al resources at the exposition, which
escapes the attention of many of its
visitors, is that of Oregon-grown
Japanese hemp, cannabis sativa

bears immense pos-
sibilities.
The fact that the United States
for a series of years imported from
foreign countries vegetable fibers
to the fabulous amount of $40,000,
000 to $50,000,000 per annum, a
great part of which could profitably
be cultivated in this country, draws
, the serious attention of our national
department of agriculture and of
farsighted and enterprising citizens
to these products of foreign soils;
and many have been the trials with
fibrous plants during the last 15 or
20 years, in nearly every state of
the Union, foremost among these
plants being the genuine hemp,
Cannabis saliva.
Attracted by the favorable re
ports in regard to the culture of
this useful growth in our neighbor
ing state of California, and the
preparation of its valuable fibers by
newly invented American machines,
which in respect to efficiency, sim
plicity and perfect work, eclipse all
similar English, French and Ger
man devices, two of our progressive
citizens, Messrs. Charles E. Ladd,
banker, and S. M. Mears, president
of the Portland cordage works, con
cluded to try this important agri
cultural industry, as also the tech
nical industries indispensable for
the preparation of the fibrous ma
terial. At heavy expense quantities of
acclimated seeds were procured,
the co-operation of an expert in

regard to culture, and the appointed
superintendent took great pains in
visiting repeatedly the different
fields, lending hi? helping hand to
the farmers and doing much for the
attainment of that grand success
which is now given ocular demon
stration at the exposition .
From the experiences gathered
this season by practical experiments,
every doubt about any possible
' unfavred chmatical conditions in
"w ivcr ur uueiaua can
be found, such as keeps the mois
ture during the growing period,
when the plant is absorbing large
quantities of water, the profitable
growth of this genuine bemp can
in advance be considered an assured
fact.
The counties of Multnomah,
Yamhill, Beuton and Lincoln, in
deed, are to be congratulated on
account of having in their midst
such enterprising farmers, who by
their untiring and intelligently con
ducted efforts have, during one
single season, fully demonstrated
that Oregon's soil and climate are
j splendidly adapted to a most vulu
j able industry, which, no doubt, is

great importance in the political
economy of the YVebfoot state, by
diversifying her agricultural 'pur
suits, and consequently developing
large technical industries, which
will bring fair wages to thousands
of willing hands, thus developing
unlimited resources to our posterity
for centuries to come.
Farmers visiting the exposition
are cordially invited to inspect
these hemp exhibits, which, by
close investigation, will prove as
interesting as instructive, since not
only the agricultural product, the
stems, are displayed, hut also
decorticated ribbons and retted
fibers, ready for the spinniZfS
