mined that the crown of Spain 6hould
descend to her family. But governing
the descent was the decree of Philip V.,
which had been law In Spain for 120
years and which declared that no wom
an could reign In Spain while there
lived a male descendant of Philip IV.
In default of male heirs from the mar
riage 01 Ferdinand V. and Maria Chris
tina, the lawful successor under the
decree of Philip V. was Don Carlos,
Ferdinand's brother. As it turned out,
the tirst child born to this couple was a
girl, Isabella, who fourteen months
later, was followed by n sister. Even
before the birth of Isabella, tho Queen
'Maria Christina began a movement for
the setting aside of the law of Philip V.
Ferdinand, for a considerable period re
sisted, but yielded at last, and on April
0, 1S30, ordered that an Incomplete de
cree by Charles IV., In 1780, which ap
peared to repeal tho Salic law, should
be published and made perpetual. All
the Bourbons protested, nud the King
endeavored to undo his action by what
was called a "decree of derogation,"
but on his deathbed he declared that
his act was the result of misrepresenta
tion mid was, therefore, null nud void.
Tills restored his act Intended to make
his daughter Isabella his heir. When
Ferdinand died Marie Christina was
reigning ns queen regent and the little
girl Isabella was the heir apparent. Just
as the Mario Christina reigns In the
name of the little boy known ns Al
fonso XIII.
The brother of Ferdinand, usually

known as Don Carhs, but who Indulged
In tlie name and title nt home of Carlos
Maria Isldor do Borlmn-y-Borbon, In
fant of Spain, entered his protest be
fore the death of Ferdinand against all
the proceedings setting aside the Salic
law admitting the female line, and de
clared himself the lawful heir-apparent
to the throne of Spain. Immediately on
the death of Ferdinand the northern
Provinces of Spain arose nnd declared
for King Charles, as he was styled, and
these people were called Carlists, a
name which continues to exist. Those
who adhered to the existing govern
ment, the government of the queen re
pent, were popularly called Christlnos.
The cnuse of Don Carlos, dear to the
Spanish heart as standing for bigotry
ana despotism, seemed nt one time like
ly to triumph, bur was betrayed by one
of Its generals. Morotto. Don Carlos
fled from Spain, nnd in 1S4-1 abdicated
In favor of his son, the second Don
Carlos. Cnbrerea Invaded Spain in
1M!), but he neglected his former prac
tice of murdering nnd mutilating his
prisoners, and his efforts were not sup
ported with the former enthusiasm.
The second Don Carlos attempted to
enter Spain In 194 nnd again In 18G0,
when he was arrested and signed a re
nunciation of his claims to the Spanish
throne. The present pretender is n
third Don Carlos, grandson of the first,
a son of Don Juan. He hns made sev
eral attempts to overthrow the govern
nient of Spnln: the most formidable le
fjnnlng in 1S73 nnd lasting until 187U.

ODDITIES OF A WEALTHY MAN.
Queer ThinKB Which Marked the Life
of George 1L Homier.
George II. Hopper, who died on his
Elmwood estate, near Cleveland. Ohio,
legan life as a tinner, and made him
self immensely rich through a contract
for furnishing tin cans to tin Standard
Oil Company. Alxmt ten years ago .Mr.
Hopper purchased Elmwood farm, near
Cleveland, and started In to lead tho
life of u gentleman farmer. Manv
amusing stories are told of him In this
connection. He decided to turn it into
a stock farm. The tlrst thing he did
was to purchase Bell Boy, a stallion,
for $31,000. Six months later Bell Bov
and the stable.s were burned. Mr. Hop
per became disgusted with the idea of
raising stock and gave it up.
He was seized with the idea nt one
time that It was the proper thing for a
gentleman of elegant leisure to own a
yacht He had one built, and christened
It. Florence, In honor of his eldest
daughter. When the yacht was com
pleted It was found to be too big to
enter the creek nt the farm, and, there
being no natural harbor at the place,
It had to be kept at Ashtabula, twelve
miles distant. Hopi)er hated the yacht
from the day It was built. It was
launched without ballast, and as It
struck the water a big wave hit It, and
It capsized and went to the bottom,
with the crew on board. The yacht
was raised, but Hopper never again put
his foot upon It.
Hopper's whole career as a farmer
was an amusing failure. He owned a
beautiful orchard of peach trees, and a
friend one day remarked that ho would
come down In the peach season nnd
partake of some.
"Do," sold Hopper, "do," grasping
him by tho hand warmly, "but let us
know when you are coming, so we can
get some peaches frgm Geneva."
Hoper was of a nervous, restless dis
position, and had lived such a busy life
that It was agony for him to be Idle.
Therefore he employed men to build a
stone wall around his park, not that the
wall was at all necessary, t"'t tllat il
gave htm something to superintend.

Origin of the Bedbug.

No Longer an Experiment
The order for 100 steel cars recently
given by the Pennsylvania Railroad
Company to the Suliocn Pressed Steel
Company of Pittsburg is a good illus
tration of tho fact that the steel car is
no longer an experiment but an accept
ed type of railway rolling stock, says
the Engineering News. It is a noticea
ble fact, however, that a large propot-
! tion of the steel cars constructed are
designed to carry heavier loads than
cars of timber construction. Tho new
Pennsylvania cars, for example, are to
cany 110.000 pounds of ore. or 104,000
pounds of coal. Thoir deaJ weight
will bo 87,000 pounds and their length
will be 33 leet. Tho competition of tho
steel car with tho wooden cars of ordi
nary capacity will not bo apparent
probably for some time, but that it
will come eventually the increasing cost
of timber nnd tho decreasing cost of
steel construction makes very certain.
Deserters Return.
A cnrlous war item coiiiob from Fort
Logan, Colo. On the morning of
April U0 a number of deserters from
the Seventh infantry appeared at tho
fort and surrendered. They said they
had heard the rumors of wat and were
anxious to participate. Col. Benhnm
ordered them to thu guardhouse, but it
is understood that the stern old warrior
will be lenient and givo the prodigals
an opportunity to fight.
