A marriage license was issued by
the county clerk this week to Aus
tin B. Hoover and Clara W. Vin
cent, of Waldport.
Al Waugh is taking much trouble
to make his shooting match at
this place next Friday a success. It
is assured that it will be.
The Norwegians of this vicinty
are airangtng to have a Christmas
tree on Christmas night at Mr. For-

Wm. R. Wakefield has been ap
pointed special guardian of John
Bain, and the place for hearing
upon the appointment will be at
Waldport.
Rev. Nodtvedt the Lutheran min
ister, preached to a large congrega
tion at the old school house in this
place last Sunday. The sermon was
delivered in the Norwegian lan
guage. Walter Ben, who has been ser
ving out a twelve days' sentence in
the county jail, will complete his
sentence tomorrow and will be a
free Indian once more. He ought
to brace up and keep straight now.
A little excitement was raised
yesterday when it was discovered
that the west line of Hill street was
about three feet from where it was
supposed to have been. Another
survey however brought the line
back nearly to its proper place
Lincoln county is shy a deputy
sheriff at present. Last Friday
Demitv Ross went to Newport on

Measles are raging in town worse
than ever. It is very probable
that they will drag along for some
time. They continue of a mild type.
In speaking of the liquor license
business last week the type made us
say county clerk when it was meant
county !court. The liquor licenses
are granted by the county court the
clerk's conuection therewith, being
only to carry out court's orders.
B. H. Barwick, of South Beach,
is in Toledo today on business. Mr.
Barwick is arranging his business
preparatory to taking a trip to the
Klondike. He expects .to start for
the frozen north land on the first of
February. He will go to Juneau,
where he will join Roy Brasfield,
formerly of this county, and togeth
er they will try the trail to Klon
dike as soon as the weather will al
low.

owe an apology to our readers, and
the controversy degenerated into a
contest as to which could be the
grreatev blackguard. We admit
ourselves beaten clear out of sight.
We might have known that natural
ability and a lifetime's experience
iu such work would count against
us and ought to have known better
than to engage in it. But we give
up beateu and hereby promise our
readers to never advertise the New
port paper again by bringing it out
of obscurity before our large circle
of readei'3.

BUFORD At Newport, Monday
Tw,)r m. 1807. Birdie Bu-
ford, aged 22 years, of pneu
monia. The death of Miss Buford was
sudden, her illness having been of
only a few days duration. It was
not considered serious until Sun
day, when a message was sent to
her father at Siletz, stating that she
was ill. The message was taken
over Sunday evening, and Mr. Bu
ford started at once for Newport,
arriving there about midnight Sun
day night, She grew worse rapid
ly in spite of all aid, and expired
about 9 o'clock Monday morning.

mable young lady. All who knew
her in life unite in speaking in the
highest terms of her sweet disposi
tion and beautiful character. Her
father, brothers and sister will feel
her loss keenly, and they have the
deepest sympathy in their bereave
ment. The remains will be taken
to Corvallis tomorrow where they
will be buried by the side of her
mother.
