    Are They Herring or Mackerel?
The new run of fish that have
come into the Bay and river this J
year are proving to be a source of
much income to the fishermen of
this river, as well as. a subject of
contention oy our nsnoiogists as
to the kind of fish they are. The
river still seems to be full of them
and a new school is reported work-.
ing its way up. Some very large
catches have been made with the
nets. Ed Paine and Bob Collins
caught nearly 2,000 last Tuesday
night with one boat and net, and
the Powers-Dalaba outfit with two
boats caught over 3,000 on the same
night. The most of the fish are
bought by the Yaquina Bay Mer
cantile company, of this place, who
are salting them down. They have
already about fifty barrels salted,
and have run out of barrels. They
will receive a lot of barrels on the
n.ext steamer, and the cooper at
Newport is turning out barrels for
them as fast as he can. The ruling
price for the fish here is a cent a
pound. If they stay in river much
longer the industry will begin to be
of great dimensions.
The contention whether they are
herring or mackeret seems to be as
far from settlement as ever, though
it is daily argued. All the --Norwegian
and Swedes here say that
they are the identical herring known
as the "Norway herring", while
all the "State of Mainers" and oth
er "down east" people stoutly as
sert that they are mackerel. But
whatever they are we hope that
they will stay in the river for a
month yet, and will arrange it so
as to come every fall and bring all
their relatives along. If they do,
the salmon fishing will be a side
industry.
There is a constant and steady j
inquiry for houses to rent in To-.
ledo. j
B. F. Jones returned Tuesday j
evening from Baker City where he j
attended the meeting of the Oregon j
Press association. He visited all '
the principal mines around Baker
City, in company with the other '
members of the association, and
brought back samples of ore from '.
each of them. He reports times
quite lively in Eastern Oregon.

Some of the Valley papers make
a great ado about a lady at Albany
that shoots China pheasants with a
shotgun. That's nothing. Lin
coln county has a female nimrod
that beats that all to pieces. Mrs.
Ida Hinshaw, of Drift creek, is a
deer hunter of considerable note.
Not only does she keep her family
supplied with venison, but she fre
quently brings a fine deer to the
market. On Tuesday of this week
she brought a big deer to Toledo
and sold it and among the purchases
she made with the proceeds was a
box of rifle cartridges with which
she will undoubtedly kill more deer.
Mrs. Hinshaw takes her place on a
stand when hunting and her dog
hunts and runs the deer. The lady
don't claim to be a crack shot, but
most of the chances are against the
deer if it once gets in range of her
trusty rifle. We claim Mrs. Hin
shaw to be the banner huntress of
Oregon.
Toledo is itself again. Last night
our friend, and everybody else's
friend as far as that is concerned,
A.J. Rader returned from Eastern
Oregon, where he has been for the
past two years. Jack has been work
ing and prospecting over in that
country with varied success lor the
past two years. He has a claim of
his own iu Baker county on which
there is an excellent prospect. But
we are not much interested in his
claim, but we are very glad to see
Old Jack himself safely back. And
never was a man more needed than
Jack is right now in Toledo.
