sale of property. In this event the

ment for the killing ot his son-in-law
In connection with the contest
for county judge the statement has
been made that Mr. J. O. Stearns
was made the victim of a trick last
spring when a petition asking his
appointment was forwarded to
Governor Lord while Judge Burt
was yet alive, and that the editor
of ihe Leader was responsible for
the origination of the report that
Judge Burt was dead. We wish to
say that such statement is absolute
ly false, and the person who started
such statement is guilty of a wilful,
malicions and outrageous lie. We
will give $10 to any person who
will bring a reputable person that
will testify that the editor- of the
Leader ever told anyone that
Judge Burt was dead at that time,
or led anyone to believe that such
was the case. Now let the parties
who give circulation to this report
produce their authority or stand
branded as wilful liars. And again,
we will give $5 to any person who
will bring any reputable person
that will testify that the report of
Judge Burt's death at that time
was started or originated by any
person living iu Toledo. Now let
us have some credible evidence.
court a year ago. Shortly after his
incarceration he was made a
"trusty" at the penitentiary, and
by a system of credits for his good
behavior he earned sufficient time
to secure his release after a little
over a year's imprisonment.
Two mighty nimrods from Toledo
made their way to the head of
Simpson creek last Friday and
camped on the head of that classic
stream that right in order to get a
lot of good early shooting at the
numerous deer that make that re

and early they were out and sure
enough they soon sighted game,
both of the hunters sighted the
game at the same time, and two
shots rang out at once. The game
dropped all right, and the two
hunters rushed up to cut off a slice
for breakfast. They were some

the town on is still open and he
can go out the same way, or any
other that he wants to. He can
even go to West' Yaquina if he
wants to, and nobody at Toledo
will object. As far as the burden
of taxation has fallen upon him the
records show the following taxes
paid by him:
State tax 0.oo
County tax o.0o
School tax. 0.00
Poll tax o.oo
City tax O.oo
Total, 00.00
Should this burden be doubled
we would not blame the gentleman
for immediately leaving the town.
