BULLETS IN BATTLE.
. 01d Soldier Tells How It Feels to Bo
Shot.
Xbo old soldier, with a hot toddy be
fore liini. was communicative.
"How did you feel when yon went
into your first fight?" the reporter in
ouiwd. M most people do when they bc
gia to ask a soldier questions about his
experiences.
"I felt as though there were a mil
Hon places in the world I'd rather be
(ban where I then was," was the frank
response.
"Were you afraid?'
"Of course I was. I knew those fel
lows shooting at us weren't doing it for
their health or for ours, either, and I
tuew enough about guns to know that
they were dangerous."
"Bat you overcame your fear as the
fight progressed?"
"Anyhow, I didn't mind it so much.
After awhile I got mad, and then I for
got about myself and wanted to lick the
entire army against us."
"Did you ever get shot?"
"Once only, and it was queer about
that You read stories in the papers
abont how it feels to be shot, and I sup
pose they are correct, for every man has
a different way of taking his cold lead.
I've Been men shot square in the fore
head, stand for an instant as if turned
into stone and then drop without ever
bending a joint Some I've seen run
screaming away and fall dead with the
scream on their lips. I've seen some
grab and clutch at themselves and spin
around as if they had been hit with a
club and didn't know what the matter
was; 6ome drop quietly and say nothing
abont it; some jump high in the air
and fall stiff as pokers, and so on
through a list of them, no two alike.
"In my own case, I was fighting in
the woods in a skirmish in Virginia on
a terrific- hot day. It was lively in there,
I can tell you, and I wasn't thinking
about myself at all. We had started on
a run through an open space after tho
Johnnies, and just as w e slowed down
when we saw they had got too close to
the main body for us to go after them
I began to feel sick and weak and told
the man next to me that I thought I
must be sunstruck. Ho began to say
something, and everything grew dark.
The next I knew I was in a hospital
with a hole through my chest. When I
got it or how, I never knew, but it
couldn't have been inoro than ton min
utes beforo I collapsed, because a man
couldn't stand up long with that kind
of a ventilator in his bosom." Wash
ington Star.
The man who should invent a ma
chine so that people could drop a penny
in the slot and pick out a name for tho
baby would surely make a fortune it
would take so many tries to get a name
to suit.

AN ARSENAL IN THE CLOUDS.
A War Airship Which I. Heine Con

In Florida a French engineer now has
under construction an airship which Is
to be placed In the Cuban service. It
will carry 125 men, 1,000 rifles, a half
million rounds of rifle ammunition and'
dynamite shells. The airship Is one
of the most remarkable things of its
kind ever conceived by nn aeronaut. Its
chief feature, which excites the great
est wonder. Is its extreme lightness con
sidering its tremendous strength. The
airship consists of a boat-shaped car
that does not swing, but Is held solidly,
though pendant, from a cluster of five
balloons.
These balloons are held steadily In
place by live aluminum belts, which
go around the girths of the balloons
and are connected at the points of con
tact by easy working ball-bearing
joints, so that there can be no strain,
and each belt can give gently one way
or the other, as the balloon It holds
the operator can ride far above the
earth, out of reach of the longest range
guns known to military science, he can
bring the enemy's camp close to his
range of vision and can throw dyna
mite bombs down upon his adversaries
with remarkable precision.

Besides the system of network which
surrounds the balloons and will holds
them attached to the car there are
aluminum braces securing the belts
or girths to the car below. These
braces are also the stays for the sails
forward and nt the sides for steering
purposes. The principle upon which
fnl fllrshll) is steeted Is the
' same which governs the sailing of a
vacht. A series or uprights over tne
car and Just under the lower valves of
the balloons sustains a shaft, which Is
revolved by electricity, and turns an
Immense fan, or screw at the rear of
the ship, which acts as an air rudder
ns well ns a propelle'.'. Kvery piece of
metal iu the entire construction of this
greyhound of the air Is of aluminum.
There are nine windows on each side,
something more than ten feet apart. A
series of long, narrow openings, closed
with aluminum bars, run around the
upper guard which Incloses the upper
deck of the boat.
This marvelous air coach Is provid
ed with comfortable accommodations
for 125 men. There Is an electrical en
gine "room, an electrical kitchen, and
bedrooms, smoklng-rnom and an obser
vatory 'llie vessel is lighted, heated
nnd worked by electricity. Water Is
taken from the clouds, and not a spark
of tire is used in working this mon
strous air ship. The balloon valves
nre operated by a system of electric
buttons, and there is no confusion of
ropes or lines. The observatory Is pro
vided with powerful glasses, and while
