When you cast a ballot for J. H.
I, utz for assessor you vote for a
worthy young man; one who has
been a resident of this county for
several years. He is competent,
intelligent, honest, sober and in.
dustrious. lie is a fit and proper
candidate and it will be to the
interest of the taxpayers of the
county to cast their vote for him.
J. M. Upton, of Bandon, Coos
county, was in this county from
Saturday until Tuesday looking
after his chances lor the office of
prosecuting attorney. Mr. Uptou
is the nominee of the populists, and
was afterward endorsed by the
democrats. He is a son of Hon.
J. II. Upton, who achieved con
siderable notoriety during the leg
islative sessiunof 1893.
In the race for county clerk it
has got down to only a question of
how big Ben Jones' majority will
be. Capt. Robertson is a clever
fellow, socially, but he simply
rattles around in his race for the
clerkship. The people have tried
Ben Jones for the past three years
and they are satisfied with him.
They appreciate his efficient aud
accommodating conduct while he
has been, in office, and they further
ing the principles of money and
distribution, as follows: Waldport,
May 26th, at 8 p. m.; Ona school
house, May 27th, at 2 p.m.; Toledo,
May 28th, at 8 p. m.; Yaquina,
May 29th, at 8 p. m. Persons of
all political faith earnestly invited.
Some of our people around here
are greatly interested in bear clogs,
and we would recommend that they
get a start of the kin ! kept by Joe
Morrison, a settler on the lower
Siletz. Joe has, or did have, a
couple of bear dogs that were the
envy of all the people in his region.
They had never beeii tried on bear,
but they had all the good points a
bear dog ever possessed. Joe had
a pig pen wim two nice pigs in it
on the opposite side of the river
from his house, aud the other day
a big beat thought that fresh pork
would taste good and come up in
broad clay took one of Joe's pigs
and started for the woods. Joe
took his two dogs aud gave chase.
The bear dropped the pig and gave
its attention to the dogs. Joe took
the pig and started across the river
with it. When he got to the other
side he heard a racket from the
other pig, and just looked around
in time to see the dogs chase it
into the river. They had concluded
a pig was a safer animal to chase
than a bear. Joe took his gun aud
went to the rescue of the other
If our friend A. L. McFadden j Saturday
has no better results with guiding
the majority of the votes his way
next June than he did in guiding a
canoe across the Siletz river last
Friday, he is a gone gosling, sure.
Mr. McFadden had poured a flood
of populist oratory onto the heads
of the defenceless Indians at the
Siletz that day, and being in a
hurry to get over to Toledo before
the reaction came, he thought he
could cut off a few feet by crossing
the river just above the mouth of
Mill creek. He borrowed an
Indian's canoe and started over.
It was his first experience with a
canoe, and it ma not last long,
either. Just as he got to where
the water was too deep to wade,
the canoe quietly rolled over and
Mac took a bath. For once the
free coinage of silver took a back
seat with Mac, and his attention
was earnestly turned toward the
best method of getting ashore. By
a kind of a 16 to 1 method, 16
kicks to one foot of progress Mac
landed safely, but on the same side
he started in at. By this time he
was over his hurry, and tying up
the canoe he crossed at the ferry
and struck out for Toledo, a wetter
but wiser man. Mac says the next
time they get him into a canoe he
will have to be blindfolded aud
dragged.
