James and Bill Sniouse and Charley
Cattem. They had two wagons.
We traveled over a hot and dusty,
dreary country without incident of
note until we reached the foot of
Mt. Hood. The young men de
termined to see the top of the old
peak, but Robert and Jau-es soon
got enough of the old trip and came
back to camp, but Riley, Dill and
Charley put their names in the box
the government has there for that
purpose, and seeing ropes down on j
the other side of the peak Bill
started down,' then soon called back
to his friends not to come any
further if they could get back. He
climbed down over some terriflic
places. The ropes was over 100
feet long aud after he reached the
end there was part of the rope gone
and he had to get down the best
he could. When he found himself
in a very dangerous place without
pike or gun for protection or de
fense. He finally reached the base
and started around the mountain
for camp. After walking near 15
miles he came to a sheep camp and
stayed all night there and started
at daylight and after a walk- of
eight miles he reached camp in
time to stop a searching party.
You may be sure they were all re
lieved for none of them wanted to
start over that mountain in search
01 nim. lie said it any one is
fond of adventure let him go through
his experience. Riley said when
he was at the foot he would give
a dollar to have been on top and
after he was on top he would have
given hi.s hair if he was in camp,
for it was a sight to look down up
on the other mountains all around,
but as lie was in his . shirt sleeves
and it was snowing and cold while
with the prospect of one of the
party all ready lost, he and Charley
started down the same side they
went up. They saw the great ice
cones and the boiling spring in its
snow bound crater s, and smelt and
saw the sulphur steam rising up
out of the place, they J knew that
there must be a hot place in the
mountains.
We came the old Barlow route
through the Cascades and through
Salem, up the Willamette valley,
through the , Kings and Blodget
valleys, over the Little Elk route,
then reached Yaquina, and up the
canyon of Simpson creek we reached
the ranch of friend A. L. Chitwood
Friday evening, the and.
We have looked around what we
could the hKt f'v.v are
well pleased with the prospects be
fore us. We have come to stay and
all want to find woik. I have a
team and would like to rent or buy
a small place where I can make an
j honest living and have good health
j an! a home without a mortgage,
j The Smoucc brothers and Charley
iCatlern are 'eiitlenieii of means.
j and are out on a pleasure trip qnd
sent to rortlan.1 and back to Salem
for 25 cents. A teamster agrees to
tak them for ao cents a hundred
and that is probably how they will
go. The railroad in reducing its
rales has not yet touched all the
buttons. Albany Democrat.
For being a free tilver man, t nd
for the part which he took in the
defeat of ex-Senator Lolph last
winter, which was more of omission
tiitui'commi.ssion, the fat 1 as gone
forth by the gold standard republi
cans mat linger ticimann must
be beaten for a renomination at the
hands of his party next year.. The
fight upon Hermann has been
opened by the Oregonian in a
series of letters purporting to come
from republicans from various parts
of the state, in all of which letters
Hermann is roundly scored. These
letters bear fictitious .'ignatures
and all are from some obscure
place. The first wa dated at
Eola, in 1'olk county, but it bore
the ear marks of Tom Tongue's
style of writing. The fight ingoing
to be an interesting one, as the
wily Binger is something of a poli
tician himself, and when his op
ponents finally capture his political
scalp, they will flu J that many of
themselves will bear wounds " that
will be long in healing.
