At Nettie Island a life buoy bflri"o-in? to the Ivanhoe wns ob tained from the natives, who found i posed here Hint the it several weeks ago. The stern end of a ship's dingy boat and some other small fresh wreckage were found in the same vicinity of Bar clay sound, but nothing further than the buoy to indicate that it be longed to the Ivanhoe. The Rush's cruise extended to Cape Scott. A succession of heavy gales were encountered. The people of Oregon would like to see the 400 convict-; at the state penitentiary put to wor-:. Since the leftishtnre tv.o years ago the prisoners have ll:id nothing to do but take regular walks avo-.r.rl the prison yard an.' the institution which costs the taxpayers about $60,000 has earned absolutely noth hu'. The f.;i:cst:o'i of road build ing by convict labor was agitated two years ago, bat of late we have heard nothing of it. Oregon needs lots cf work done on hc-r roads an I if some means of proper guarding the prisoners could be thought of, , road-making would be the most appropriate' work the prisoners could be put at. At all events our next legislature should teraiinaie . this period of pernicious idleness. Rogue River Courier. A dispatcli was also re ceived by Captain Farcn'iolt, light house inspector, from the keeper of the lighthouse at Cape Disap pointment stating that no light was visible at Tillamook, and in the evening his assistant, Lieutenant Bliss, left for Astoria to investigate the matter. T!ic Columbine is no w at that port and will probably go over to the rock this morning. Captain Farenholdt did not place . much faith in the story from the fact that the light jeannot be seen from the Washington station, ex cept in clear weather. 4 V :.t V 'J Si , t "I 1 . .
