The disagreement heretofore ex isting between the counties of Benton and Lincoln concerning the tax rolls, assessments, etc,, are in a fair, way of adjustment, Judge Burt informs us that ah understand ing has been had between the courts ! of the two counties and inline with this t nderstanding stipulations have been drawn up and agreed to and will be s;gned in due time by .each pf .each piece of property by tho value ot adjacent property. In any case where the .two men cannot agree they -shall call in a third dis interested party to aid them nud the decision of two of the three shall be final and biuding on both counties." After this property has heen segregated the clerk of Benton county shall make and deliver to Lincoln county a supplemental tax roll containing the property found to be property in Lincoln county, Where taxes have been collected in Benton county on Lincoln county property Benton county will issue a warrant to Lincoln county for $he amount, less the state taxes lhereon paid by Benton county, and Lincoln county wjll do likewise. Lincoln county is to pay the county clerk of Benton county for the mak ing of the supplementary tax roll. Each county will pay their own man on the board of segregation, and in case a third roan is called in the counties pay him oue-hftlfoaeh, There are several minor condi tions but these are the most salient points of the. stipulations, To our mind the courts of each county, have pursued the wisest course possible, By these stipulations all costly litigations wjll be avoided and each county will be treated :airly, Lincoln county will receive all the taxes due her and will be in a position to collect the delinquent taxes of previous years, This agreement, wheu completed, will practically settle all the differ ences existing between the two counties, and this will be a condi tion very gratifying to the taxpay ers of both counties. The counties cannot afford to quarrel, much less to go to law. Litigation is too ex pensive, and they have too many interests in common. It is to be sincerely hoped that nothing will occur to prevent a complete settle ment of the differences between the two counties. Some of the absolutely unneces sary expenses of the Senate of the United States that are paid for by the people are exposed by the pen of "Rene Bache" a writer in the De roit Free Press, in a recent issue of that paper, Among the host of superfluous and unnecessary things the people are asked to pay for we elean a few, as iollows: In a sink year over forty cases of Ap )llinaris is drank after it is mix el with the juice of thirty-five boxes of lemons and sweetened with 1,200 pounds of granulated sugar. To get this opeu they were furnished twelve dozen corkscrews. They consumed 23 gallons of the finest cologne, 18 gallons of bay rum. 19 gallons of alcohol, three dozen ho'.iles of ponl 1 ill y wash, two bottles of brllantine, four ounces of bergamot oil, one ounce of oil of rose, three bottles of yucca balsam, three bottles of herbanium, ten pounds of vaseline and costly toilet soaps by the gross, and yet with all that perfumery the senate is a stench in the nostrils 0' honest men. They also used 6j4 gallons of castor oil, 4,400 quinine pills, 24 dozen of the best palm leaf fans, 52 dozen pocket books, ana 17 aoT.en pocket knives The:- are onlv a few of the items selected out of a long list of ex travajances of the senate the peo' pie are called upon to pay for. In the latter class, and right at the head, too, stands the great state of Oregon. In climatic conditions, fertility of soil, diversity of pro ducts and matter of location Oregon is ahead of any other state in the Union. It is true that we have a long wet winter, but it is scarcely ever disagreeably cold, and men work all day in the rain and never take cold. The rainfall, in fact, is an immense blessing. Stock never freezes in the winter, the natural e . grazing groumis are rareiy ever covered with snow, and stock graze the greater part of the wintet. The great rainfall absolutely in sures an abundant Harvest tor everything that grows iu this climate. The dreaded cyclone and feared thunder storms never come. The pests that inflict crops in other states are . almost unknown In Oregon. The climate is healthful, the noil fertile and nature has been extremely lavish with her bless ings.
