Butler, will go to Independence next Monday where she wilj stop a short time with her sister, and then go on to Washington, A man shipped a cat from this place to Walla Walla one day this week on which he paid $3 express age. W, II, Odell, of Salem, went over to the reservation yester day to survey ami allot about forty more claims to Indians or part blood Indians who were not on the reservation at the time of the previous allotment, A petition is being circulated about Tillamook asking congress to appropriate $150,000 for the har bor, and )!t3, 000,000 for a railroad Irom the Willamette valley, the latter to be operated by the govern. ment at cost. One can hardly imagine how many people have their eyes on ihu Silet. reservation awaiting its open ing with a view ti settlement thtjre- 011. The opening of this body of land to settlement would bring huti'lieds of settlers to Lincoln county. Newport Lodge No. Ho, I. O. O, F. will erect a two story lodge building at Newport. The building will be erected on the water front at Fredricksburg, and when com. pleled will be one of the best lodge rooms in this part of the state The bill for lumber, which amounts to over 65,000 feet, has been pur chased at the Toledo saw mills. John Ftzpatriek, the Hole 1 Mon terey man, has made application to the Indian department for permis sion to erect a cannery on the Si let river. Mr. Fitpatriek is an old time Columbia river fisherman ami has large interests at that place yet. He contemplates erecting a 10,000 cannery and will take care of the salmon catch of the Silet., This will be a great benefit to the Indians if the plan Is consummated. Bob Campbell has been suffering during the past week with poison oak, and he says that if anyone is so unfortunate as to be poisoned with the aforesaid oak anil will call on him he will give them the bene fit of seventeen different prescrip tions, all guaranteed to cure, rang ing from thy salt applied externally to kerosene applied hypoderinically. Meantime Bob advises everyone to keep away from the oak. John Savage, a farmer living near Summit, in Benton county, was ar raigned iu the circuit court at Cor vallis, charged with the crime of incest committed on his 17-year-old daughter. It seems that Savage has been suspected of this crime for some time, but as he had made threats 110 one iu the neighborhood dared to inform on him. While the grand juiy was in session, Savage, suspecting th.it an indictment might be found a.;.iitist him, left the county. Two of the girl's aunts being convinced that such state of affairs existed, confronted the gill with it, who roke down and con fessed the truth. The trial will piobably come off Friday, ! J, Valaer and wife left for Ranier, Oregon, the first of the week, where they will visit about a month after which they will go to Walla Walla, where they will make their future home, Krogstad Bros, have been cutting lumber and filling up their yard and shed. They are getting a good stock of finished lumber in the sheds and will rustle for a market for their lumber. The election of McKinley has so stimulated Clark Copeland that he shipped his wool on the first of the week on the strength of it. His total clip amounted to about a hun dred pounds. Wm. Bogue has bought a peice of land from Henry Denlinger and has purchased lumber to erect a new dwelling thereon. He has taken a job of dyking on the tide land. Oregon City has a "mock senate" by which their people expect to derive much pleasure and consider able profit in the way of an under standing of parliamentary laws and usages, and the discussions of questions of the day, Many people of Benton county at the time of the division paid their taxes to the sheriff of this county. Their property is now being adver tised by Lincoln county to be sold for taxes. Such property owners hold sheriffs receipt for their taxes. Is it or is it not Benton county's duty to protect these receipts?-- Corvallis Times, Last Call.
