What is it: It is a simple, harmless preparation, free from taste, smell and color, that has the properties oi stopping and preventing fer mentation in all vegetable and animal foods. What it does: It is especially useful for preserving fruits of all kinds without cooking, retaining their natural fresh appearance and taste. Its Use does away with labor, and makes what has been a hot disagreeable task, a delight and a pleasure. It substitutes for -the Sum mer heat of the kitchen the cool shade of a lawn or piazza. Its Upsults are never doubtful when used according to directions, and Plum Puddings, Peach and Uerry Pies can be had in Winter as well as in Summer. Its 1'se is profitable and economical, for it saves one-half of the sugar, saves the jars broken by heat, saves the fruit cooked away, and saves the time and labor lost by the old methods. For filler it unsurpassed. It stops fermentation at any point desired, and produces a sparkling beverage like Champagne. The question is sometimes asked, "Is It injurious?" To allay nil doubts on that score, we would say that we have consulted many of our most eminent Chemists and Physicians, and all unite in pronouncing the use of AXTIFEI5MKXTIXE as a preservative, a perfectly safe and harmless preparation. The belief is steadily gaining grouu that they have already "realized.' T. M. Poormau, of the Bank of Woodhurn appears to be some what of a joker. Some two months ago he was strolling along in the World's fair woman's building, in Chicago, when a lady approached accompanied by a Columbian guard. When she reached where he was at the foot of the stairway, on the steps of which some women and children were sitting, she gave an order to the guard and passed on The guard turned to the women and told them they would have to get up and move on as the steps would have to be kept clear, "La dies, you can sit still just where you are," said Poormau. The guard looked at him in amazement and said, "Pril nns you don't knw who that lady was who gave that order." "I do not," said Poor man, who is slier lliat was Mrs. i'otter Palmer, the president of the woman's fair committee, said the guard, "Perhaps you don't know who I am," said Poor man. "I do not" said the guard "who are ori?" "Iain Governor Pennoyer, of Oregon," said Poor man. The guard hxjkcd amned and passed on while the women looked grateful ami snt Mill, Sa lem Statesman. been per of R. II. His father, who was then living, gave the child to us to raise as our own child. My wile, who has no children, became very strongly attached to him. When he was about a Year old he received a fall from a horse which fractured his skull. We did not know of the injury to the bead at the time, but supposed it to i:u the spine that was injured until some months after, when he was taken with paralysis. We then took him to the medical college at St. Louis, but the medi cal corps refused to do anything for him, saying that he could not live but a short time. Since then we have consulted the best medical experts in both Missouri and Kan- is with the same results that nothing could be done, and that he could not live but a short lime, and so for twenty-two years he has re mained nearly as helpless as nn in fant. A short time ago Dr. Rich, uolic- ng his helpless condition, examined his head and staled that he believed that his condition could be benefit ted by a surgical operation. The more he observed and thought of it the stronger became hisconviction. He consulted lb-. Applewhite, of Corvallis, and they concluded to illenipt the operation, but my wife was loth to consent to any treat ment that might jeoaprdi.c the life of her constant charge, but Dr. Rich finally convinced her that the risk was very slight in comparison with the benefit that might result from u successful effort. She at last gave her reluctant consent, thoui'h the shock was nearly as great to her as il was to the patient. The operation was performed by Drs. Applewhite and Leonard, ns sistctl by Dr. Carter, and under the direction of Dr. Rich. They first removed or turned back the scalp about two by three inches, then bored a hole three-fourths of inch in diameter through the skull, reaching the old injury, which was plainly visible and which they re moved carefully with fine instru ments, 1 think the operation a triumph of surgical skill, and I think that I am not altogether a mean judge, as I served In the U. S. hospital as a steward after Some of the hardest battles cf modern times, and have witnessed numerous surgical oper ations. I w ish to state further, that not only our gratitu le, but the love and icspect of all lovers of hu manity is ilue Dr. Rich lor his no ble attempt to alleviate its suflcring. He is still attending to the patient daily for no pay but an approving conscience, and the benefit to med ical science. At this writing the patient is improving rapidly wiih strong hopes of a speedy recovery. J. S. Conki.in. city officers, passed off very quietly last Monday. There were 60 votes cast, the vote on incorporation standing 37 for and 18 against, five ballots being thrown out as defee-' tive. The ticket as nominated was elected by about an average of forty-five votes each, The officers elected serve until next January, their successors being elected on Tuesday after the first Monday in December next. The newly elected officers are all safe and conserva tvie men and the interests of the city v ill be safe in their hands. The county court meets next Wed nesday, and upon the filing of its report the city will then be duly incorporated and the officers will enter upon the discharge of their duties. . . . . , liKAi. i.vrviK nu!i.u;iw.
