DIVORCES WITHOUT JUDGE?
Lawyors, Apparently, May Grant Ono
In California.
Los Angeles. Judges nnd lawyers
learned with surprise that through mi
amended provision of tlio htato consti
tution apparently any quallllcd attor
ney may grunt a decree of divorce.
This became known by tho recent
granting of three decrees In .Santa
Rosa by attorneys blttluj; as Judges pro
temporo nfter havIiiB been solocted to
try tlio actions of tho UtlKants them
selves without tlio sanction of the
court. Tho modified amendment reads;
"A caso in tho superior court may bo
tried by 11 Judgo pro temporo, who must
bo a member of tho bur, agreed upon
In writing by tho parties litlgaut vr
their attorneys of record nnd sworn to
try tho cause, and tho person so select
ed shall bo empowered to act In such
capacity In nil further proceedings lu
any suit or proceedings tried beforo
him until tho final Cletcrmliatlon there
of." Tho clauso "appiovcd by the court"
has been omitted from tho act.
