FRENCH GOVERNMENT WANTS

War orders aro now beginning to

enormous ordor for lumber for tho
French government Is bolng bid on
by tho mlllB of tho North. Tho Oro
gonlan of yesterday tells the follow

"Lumber mills on tho Colum
bia Illver and Pugot Sound have
Just been Invltod to bid on 200,000,-
1000 foot of fir lumbor for lmmediato
delivery to tho French government.
Contract With Ilrokcr.
"Contracts for all this material
havo beon placed with a San Fran
cisco lumber broker. Tho entlro
ordor Is to bo filled by mills In Ore
gon and Washington.
It Is understood, however, that
tho ordor will bo distributed exclu
sively among tho mills on tho Col
umbia Klvor and on tho Sound. All
tho big mills In Portland aro bidding
on portions of tho ordor varying from
10,000 to n0,000,000 feet. Tlio
work will bo nnportlouod among
them, It Is understood, within the
next few wcoks.
Want Italroad Ties
"Tho ordor calls for 5 largo quan
tity of railroad tloi and for lumbor
of othor varying dimensions to bo
used, doubtless, In lining trouches
and In othor battlofront activities,
"Competition for this business Is
said to bo keon, and It is probable
that tho price- that will accruo to
tho mills will not oxceed $12 or $13
por thousand,
"At this flgtiro tho entire order
will bring approximately $2,600,000
worth of business Into tho torrltory.
It will onablo many mills that now
nro running on part tlino or at
partial capacity to run on full tlnio
and to tho limit of tholr respective
capacities.
French Finnish Routs
"Under terms of tho contract
between tho French authorities and
tho Ban Francisco brokerago firm
tho lumber Is to bo dollvorod f.o.b,

ment is to provide transportation.
According to present arrangements
tho shipment will bo handled en

business starts to move.
May On by Hall.
"If the Canal Is not open by that
tlnio It Is possible that tho wholo
movement will go to tho Atlantic
seaboard by rail. In that event,
howovor, somo difficulty mny bo ox
perloncod in gottlug cars to carry
it. Tho rails now nro confronted
with tho dual difficulty of a car
uhortago in tho lntorlor und traf

CJIvo Reasons Why
Tho WlllyB-Overlnnd Company of

In tho first plnco, thq domand ox

This coupled with tho fact that tho
