AN UNJUST SCHOOh LAW
TODAY Is school election day but
under tho laws of Oregon n
person living In a school dis
trict of the first class, such as
Jifarshflcld may not vote unless his
of her name appears as a taxpayer
on tho last assessment roll. The
only exception Is in tho case bf
ppoplo having stock In a corporation
as corporations that nro assessed.
Under this law a woman may not
vote In a school election oven though
hor husband bo a taxpayer and even
tjiough sho havo children in school.
No man with children in school may
vbto nt a school elccttlon unless ho
bo a taxpayer. In districts of tho
third class, however, any head of a
family mny voto oven though ho bn
not a taxpayer.
Tho law as it stands with refer
ence to tho qualification of women
voters at school elections is absurd
and unfair. Women nro particular
ly interested In school affairs and
arb particularly qualified to Judgo
of school probloms and act upon
thorn. Yet tho majority of woniyn
nro prohibited by Jaw from exor
cising tho right of franchlso at
school elections. A bachelor if ho
is n taxpayer may voto or any In
dividual but tho mother of children
S. considered unfit to voto unless
by clianco sho lias somo property
assessed In her own name.
Thero Is no law on tho statuto
boblts moro improper or more un
just. It thoro aro to bo qualifi
cations for school elections beyond
thoso of tho ordinary elector thoso
qualifications most assurodly should
not bo such as to make out lnwu
of women who havo children in
ffcuool and who thoroforo como most
directly in touch with school affairs
and aro most vitally concerned In
(lie proper administration of tho
schools.
Tho woman of Oregon should got
tbgbthor In n united way and seo
to it that this rellu or Imrbnrlsni is
thkon oft tho Statuto books of Oregon.

by the choir. On nc.t Thursday even
ing a reception will bo tendered
Ulshop Sumner nt Oulld Hall when
an opportunity will be given all
members and friends or tho church
to meet tho new Ulshop and hear of
Ills plans for tho advancement of the
Church In Oregon.
In his sermon yesterday Ulshop
Sumner spoke on Good Citizenship,
the attitude of service to the enured
nnd community being given special
stress.
Regarding plans and hopes for the
dloccso of Oregon three special wish
es of tho Bishop wcro advanced.
Tho first wns missions, "for with
out missionary work, said Bishop
Sumner, a church soon dies of dry
rot. A church which has no interest
outsldo of the four walls or its
church edifice narrows Its vision tin
til Its efficiency in the work of Christ
Is gone.
Tho second was tho conservation
of child llfo Tor tho church. "Tho
church opens its doors and cries for
tho child and gets It not," said tho
bishop "and the fault lies not with
tho child, not with tho public schools
as is so often claimed, not with the
traps and pitfalls of tho streets but
with tho parents. "Wlmt aro you
parents doing toward building up a
character that will withstand tho
temptations offered to your child?
Wlmt religious instructions nro you
giving your child? I should llko to
seo tho doors of your parish room
open very day In tho week for tho
entertainment nnd instruction of tho
children or .Marshriold, that thoro
might bo healthful, recreation nnd
amusements to offset tho many vic
ious pastimes so easy for tho child
to find."
Tho third hopo or Bishop Sumner
wns to found in Oregon n natlvo
clorgy. "Slnco tho Episcopal church
was built In Oregon there havo beon
but two candidates for holy orders
from tho state," said tho bishop,
and Oregon needs clergymen for
her many parishes and missions,
mnny moro than tho Eastorn somln
arlcs can furnish." Tho bishop spoko
most earnestly to tho young moii nnd
boys In tho congregation urging
thorn to consider tho ministry ns of
fering tho greatest field for sorvlco
to humanity. Ho spoko also to par
ents urging them to dcdlcnto their
'boyn to tho sorvlco of Christ. "Somo
will say," said Bishop Sumner. "That
thoy cannot afford to educnto their
boy for tho ministry. Olvo mo tho
boy and I will Kot tho monoy for his
education."

Gas Stove Convenience with Kerosene

A good oil stove concentrates all its heat at
the cooking point. That avoids an over
heated kitchen and that means comfort for
the cook even on hot, sweltering summer
days.

Oil Cook-Stove
For Best Results Use Pearl Oil
'An oil stove brings the convenience of gas to
homes without gas. No heavy fuel to carry. No
dirt and ashes. And yet it cooks anything -a big
coal or wood stove does. It is clean, convenient,
economical. No odor. Does not taint the food.
