Pat L. Burr Returns From San
Francisco and Leaves for
Myrtle Point
Pnt It. Durr, of tho contracting
firm of Wlllett &. Durr, working on
the construction of the, Smith-Powers
logging road out of Myrtle Point, re
turned to Marshfield today on the
Redondo from a t rco weeks' visit
In Snn Francisco during the Christ
mas and New Year holidays. He
left this afternoon for Myrtlo Point
ro Inspect the work being done o.it
at the" camp.
Mr". Durr stnted that the contract
ing firm had not brought any laborers
from the outBldo for several weeks
as enough help could be found among
tho men requiring work In tho county.
He reported rl'nt there were, about
COOO men out of work In San Fran
cisco, but that efforts by tho city to
nlil them Irtul resulted In an Influx of
thousnnds of men from other parts
of California. ,
He said that the men had refused
to work for $2. GO a day, although
tho jobs provided for them were giv
en as an emergency, and that the
payment of $3 n day 1-nd resulted In
men quitting Jobs elsewhere and
flocking to tho higher pay In San
Francisco, The result wns that the
plan to glvo help to those out of
work had ended In rows and no bene
fit was obtained by tho men. He re
ported that a great many I. W. W.'s
wore also active nmong tho ranks of
the workers.
