FINISH TUNNEL MANY AT
IN 13 MONTHS
Contractor Porter Reported to
Have Set Early Date tor
Railway's Completion.
KUOEXB. Or.. Auk. 21. Tho
Register says: "Thnt the 1200-foot
tunnel on tho new Southern Paci
fic line, tho Wlllnmette-PacIflL
from KiiKeno to Marshllold, will bo
complete a year from September
Is the declaration of Contractor Por
ter, which means the virtual com
pletion of the rond to Coos May
within thirteen months. Chief En
gineer II. P. Hoey, of tho Southorn
Pacific Hues In Oregon has stated
that flnlshliiK the Wlllnmctto-Pn-
ciflc hnngs upon the completion of
this tunnel, eight miles long, nnd
thnt nil grades to tho tunnel nnd
beyond will bo finished nnd rails
laid by the tlmo It Is completed. At
n recent trip of inspection over tho
line he was told thnt eighteen
months would be necessary to fin
ish tho tunnel.
'Contractor Porter now declares
thnt work will bo rushed to such
an extent thnt tho long cut will bo
completed five months nhcad of
contract.
At present the cut extends only
410 feet and Is progressing nt tho
ato of 125 feet a month. This
ate, however, represents only n
fraction of the capacity of the com
pressor, nnd the rnte can be In
creased two or three times, especial
ly if mechanical menus aro em
ployed to rcmovo the "muck" which
Is now lifted by hand, nnd hnuled
out of tho tunnel by mules In
small cars. Only two drills nro In
operation, nnd this number will
bo Increased to tho full capacity
of tho air compressor.
'A stenni shovel will bo Installed
0 handle the refuse, a doukev en-
glue will carry It from tho tunnel,
and tho south heading will bo open
ed, allowing tho tunneling to pro-
cod from each cud.
"Tho tunnel work Is bolng carried
on under fnvorablo conditions. Tho
sandstone rock Is comparatively
soft to handle, but sufficiently hnrd
to require no timbering. Tho con
struction Is uuiquo In thnt the
heading Is cut nlong tho bottom of
the tunnel rather than the top. A
platform Is then built and tho rock
above blown onto this nnd allowed
to fall through trap doors Into the
cars.
'It will require two or three
months to complete the cut on the
Bouth sldo preliminary to opening
tho heading. The grudo north of
tho tunnel Is virtually complete to
tho Umpqun River."
