Assessor Thrift Completes
Compilation of Tax Roll of
Coos County This Year.
County Assessor T. .1. Thrift com
pleted a summary of the assessment
roll for Coos County for tho yenr
1SH3, which shows the value of all
property in the county to be over
$22, (i-i l.i'Tu, an increase of three
and one-half millions over last year.
It was, however, expected that tho
aggregate would reach $2, 000. 000.
The State Tax Commission nssesses
railroads, telegraph and telephone
companies, and when this Is made
the total will probably reach $211,
000,000. One feature of tho assess
ment figures Is tho dearth of money
In Coos County, there being among
Its approximately 10,000 inhabitants
but $9,S50, certainly a most deplor
able financial condition.
There nre 20, 175 acres of tillable
lands, valued at $1,1551,800, and
SI 0,020 acres of non-tillable lands,
valued at $ 1 :t,4 S 1 .S?r. The Im
provements of deeded Innds total
$072,000, whilo tho Improvements
to town and city lots, which are
valued at $:!, 7 10,(552, aggregate $1,
115,(15. Improvements on Innds
not deeded amount to $10,105.
Thoro nro 3!l .1-1 miles of logging
railroads valued nt $30,100, and tho
valuation of tho rolling stock is
given at $S3,S00. Steamboat, snll
boats, stationary engines and manu
facturing mnchlnes within tho coun
ty nre valued nt $501,200, and mer
chandise and stock In trade shows
on tho roll at $:rr,7,225.
At the tlmo tho assessment was
made there was lint $!)S50 fn money,
while or notes and accounts there
was $r.!.2 ir., and $227,!' 15 In shares
and stocks.
Tho valno or household rumrture,
watches nnd Jewelry being only $10,
5S0, shows conclusively that Coos
County people aro not oxtrnvugant
In their homo furnishings, flaunt
an astonishing sinatl amount of Jew
elry and either reckon time by the
sun's movements or prey upon
central for tho necessary Informa
tion. ''arming Implements, wagons, car

assessed valuation of $80,150. Thoro
aro 2.5S7 horses and mules, valued
at $111,085, unrf t .1,07-1 catrfo val

there are 7200, valued at $18,1150:
202,'l swine valued at $8:155, whllo
the 021 dogs aro valued nt $5080,
or nearly one-half as much as nil
tho household furniture, Jewelry and
watches, and more than two-thirds
us much ns two thousand head of
hogs. It Is somewhat ivmnrkablc
let' It be snfd Incidentally, how a
people who have but $0850 In cold
cash can nlTonl dogs valued nt more
than half that sum. Hut thoy do,
nevertheless, for the Assessor says
so.
The board of equalization, con

Clerk nud Comity Judge, will meet
on September 8, There will prob
