that the career of Admiral Nelson
was tremendously Inllueiiced by u
sudden determination of will which
throughout his life made him face
danger without lllnclilng, and led to
the great victory that has given Its
name to this famous open spot of
Loudon.
Horatio Nelson was bom at llurn
linm Thorpe, Norfolk, September 2!),
1758, the son of tho rector of that
place. He received smatterings of
education at Norwich, Downham, mid
bo a hero, and, coiilldlug In Provi
dent e, I will bravo every danger!"
Hu afterward upoko of this Inspira
tion as his "radiant orb," and It nr
fected his whole life, lie became a
lieutenant In 1777. In I78.'l he led
an attack on Turks Island, which
was repulsed. In 17114 he lost his
right eye at Culvl and three years
later at TeuerllTu his right arm was
so wounded that It had to be amputa
ted. This yenr he was one or the
heroes or the battle or St. Vincent
when the Spanish Meet was vanquish
ed. Tho following yetir ho was sent
to discover the purposes of a great
