CLAY IS GOOD
E. C. Darker Received Encouraging
Reports from Experts.
E. C. Darkor who discovered In
this county clay which ho bollovcd
would bo of vnluo for Its graphlto has
received encouraging reports from
tho state chemist. The material con
tains but lltt.o graphlto but It Is of
vnluo for pottery clay. Tho follow
ing lottcr explains Itself:
Eugone, Ore., Sept. 10, 1912.
Mr. E. C. DARKER,
Marshfield, Oregon.
Dear Sir.
In tho cotton packing In this bo
you will find n couplo of pieces of
tho material you submit. I mould
ed a brick from sonio of your sam
ples, broke Into two pnrts, and
burned ono of them, In this wny
securing tho pieces enclosed. You
will sec from this that tho material
Is a clay of high plastic value, and
with but a small shrinkage upon
burning. If you hnvo a largo
amount of It easily accessible, It
should havo sonio vnluo for pottery
making.
At first sight this material looks
like graphite, but in In spite of tho
ciobc rosomulnnco I do not bellovo
that there Is any grnphlto In It. At
most It could bo only an luslgntlt
cant trace, and to dotormluo Just
how much would bo n costly process
in no way worth while.
I havo never Been a clay Just like
this ono, and Inter shall examine.
Kb chemical composition moro ex
actly. It anything Interesting should
dovclop I shall bo pleased to lot
you know.
If I can bo of further sorvlco to
you In nny way, pleaso lot mo know.
Very truly yours,
O. F. STAFFORD,
Chemist, University of Oregon.
