C. J. MILLIS, Vice-President and

R. R. & N. Co., Marshflold, Ore.:
Dear Sir: Tho substantial citizens
of Mnrahllold feol that It would bo
well nt this tlmo to tnko stons look
ing toward tho acquisition of proper
ty for city park purposes. Tho prop
erty now owned by tho city, which Is
avnllnblo for park purposes is very
smnll nnd will not nfford Bufllclcnt
room to nccommodnto a lnrgor popu
lation. Discussing this problem with
tho citizens of Mnrahllold, I havo
found a nomtlar fooling manifested
In tho question which shows tlutt such
commodious nark grounds aro greatly
desired, nnd It has been woll suggest
ed that tho city should securo a strip
of land SCO feet wldo oxtondlng from
tho old cemetery In Marshflold west
ward ln a srtnlght lino to tho wnter
front near Tar Heel Point below Empire
This tract of land Is covered with
all of tho native growths of this part
of tho Stato, and being crossed in
places with flowing streams could bo
mado very attractive In tho ovont
that tho city of Marshflold should
acreo to build and mnlntln n plank or
hnrd surfneo roadway throughout tho
ontlro length of this strip of land,
upon whnt terms could tho city secure
thnt part of tho tract now owned by
you?
It might bo argued that 350 feet Is
too wldo n roadwny, but In this case
such Is not true. On account of tho
uneven character of tho surfaco, al
lowance will havo to bo mado for
grades and tho winding contour of n
roadway. Furthermore, It la necos
sary to havo this much land In order
to make an attractive park.
I nm Inclosing you n map showing
In red Ink lines tho area .covered by
tho proposed park grounds and boule
vard. I would thank you to give this
matter your careful consideration and
lot mo know at your earliest conveni
ence whether it meets with your favor
nnd upon what terms you are Inclined
to take the matter up with tho city.
Yours respectfully,
E. E. STRAW.
MARSHFIELD, Sept. 10, 1910.
DR. E. E. STRAW, Mayor of tho City
of Marshfleld, Marshfleld, Ore:
Dear Sir: Your favor of Sept. 9th
1 before mo. I approve of the sug
gestion that the matter of a city park
receive early consideration. 1 am
of the opinion, however, that it would
bo difficult to secure a strip of lanu
350 feet wide extending from tho old
cemetery to the water front near Tar
Heel Point, although a narrower strip
might bef provided without serious
difficulty.
I do not know Just how thdContral
Pacific people would feel with refer
ence to this matter, but should you
succeed In securing tho property from
other holders I believe my recom
mendation would bo to donate land
through their holdings, provided sune
