Ashton, of tho lower river, having
secured tho contract from F. S. Dow
for transporting freight from his
warehouse down tho river and from
tho Elizabeth and Flfleld for bring
ing their freight up the river, last
week placed a lino of scows towed by
gasollno boats for tho purposo of do
ing tho work. Ho has let contracts
for tho construction of largo covered
scows for uso during the wlnteV. It
is reported that he expects to place
passenger steamers on tho run in a
short time,

lott house In Bend, and narrowly
missed killing tho two-year-old babo
of Mr. and Mrs. Tripplett. At tho
tlmo tho child was asleop in a baby
buggy. The rock In its descent struck
tho sldo of the buggy, badly splinter
ing it and missing the sleeping babe
by about six inches, and tho child was
uninjured. Tho rock, which weighed
about 15 pounds, tore a big holo
