COQUILLE, Ore., April 2S. The jury in the case of "Coon- skin Charley" Neal brought Ina verdict of not guilty. The first ballot was eight to four for con- viction, the next nine to three for conviction but Ilnnlly all agreed on the not guilty verdict. COQUILLE, Ore., April 2S. Dis trict Attorney Gee. Brown went up against an unexpected defense yes terday In tho case of the State vs Chas. Neal, known as "Coonskln Charley" who was on trial on an in dictment charging him with collect ing the Coos county bounty on coy otes killed In Idaho. The prosecution had shown by several witnesses that Neal had col lected the bounty on a large number of scalps that were old and dried out. Also that a number of the witnesses had met him en route from Rose burg to Coquille on the day prior to his collecting tho bounty and that he was carrying tho bag from which he delivered the pelts to County Clerk AVatson. Also that he had brought the sack Into Roscburg when he came in on tho train from Idaho. The case seemed conclusive and Dis trict Attorney Brown rested his case with a contented smile, as ho was certain that he had shown It was Impossible for Neal to have killed the coyotes In this county. But when Neal started In and of fered his version, the smile on Mr. Brown's face gradually faded. Neal ndmltted all the testimony offered by the prosecution and that the wit nesses had seen him as they alleged. However, ho said that several months previous ho had been in Coos county and had returned eastward between the Middle and South Forks of the Coquille and spent sometime trap ping. He got a large number of coy ottes and as tho roads were bad ho went on to Roseburg intending to collect the bounty there. Ho said he supposed that there was only a state bounty on them and not until his brother-in-law informed him that Coos county was paying an extra bounty was he enlightened as to his error. Then ho said he had to hast en to his old home in Idaho so he postponed collecting any bounty on them. Intending to return later and do It. So several months later when he had to return to Roseburg and also to Mrytlo Point to seo relatives Just Think Sperry's Best Family Floor Down to 1.75 . -- NORTH BEND NEWS Mrs. A.
