rm HAT WAS an Interesting news
I Item Tho Times published Sat
urday showing that Myrtle
Grange of Myrtle Point, publicly de
clared against the proposed Assem
bly by the machine leaders of Ore
gon. This is the first expression of
the people and gives the Ho direct to
the Oregonian's statement that Coos
county favors the Assembly. A few
politicians may, but tho great major
ity of the voters believe In and will
stick by the direct primary. Walt
and watch!
WAIT AM) WATCH.
wpjHE LONG discussed, much plan
sj ned assembly scheme Is now
" ready for use. An assembly, or
In other words a convention, is to
be held in Portland In July. At that
time a slato will bo adopted and
when tho primary election is held
tho machine element throughout tho
entire state will get behind it and
try to put it through. Tho former
political "leaders" want to get back
Into power. They want to do away
with the "abuses" of the direct prim
ary. Thoy don't want candidates for
nominations to come out by them
selves, mako promises direct to tho
peoplo and run for ofllce upon their
merits. They want them to como
to tho bosses and tho bosslets as
they did of old. A man is forward
and solf seeking who comes out for
office of his own account without
first "fixing matters" with tho pow
ers that be. If a man wants to run
for ofllco ho should go see Joe Simon
or some other remnant of tho rotten
ring that once dominated this state.
Ho should not look to tho citizen
ship of tho state. Only a demagogue
does that. At least this is the view
of tho assomblytes.
However tho peoplo of Oregon ad
opted tho direct primary law. They
did so for a purpose. They did so
In order to wipe out bossism. In
order to do away with galling, assl
nlno system of allowing a few self
appointed political manager to name
tho officials and dictate tho policies
of this state. It is a pretty safe
guess that tho people have no desire
to roturn to the old system. Somo
politicians may bo weary of tho di
rect primary, nut tho rank and file
of tho peoplo nro cntlroly satisfied
Avlth it. Wait and watch what they
do to tho slate that will bo framed
up by Mr. Simon and his fellow ring
sters. Tho action of Myrtlo Grango at
Myrtlo Point In declaring against
tho Assembly Is merely an Intima
tion of tho sentiment of tho peoplo
of Coos county.

O GOOD EVENING.

O
Mother Irolnnd.
O true and dark-eyed Mother Land,
yo'vo mourned thlm day by day,
The childer' av your achin' breast
who've fared a world away!
Be moorland and bo loch and whin
ye've mourned for all your lost,
But still ye've smiled and still ye've
watched and counted not ttie
cost.
And dark, In faith, the ould hours
foil and cold tho ashes grew,
But Ireland, Mother Ireland, still
yo've waited fond and true;
And now the Night has vanished,
wid the sorrows it has known,
We'll hear the call av Ireland, lads,
av Ireland to her own!

There are those who preach so
much they haven't time to practice.
There are people who live in such
a way that death Is about the best
luck that can befall them..
It Is always easier to remember
what you have done for others than
to recall favors extended to you.
The sympathy of a man who Isn't
really sorry for you, is about the
most unsatisfactory thing on earth.
Those under 20 see the form of a
good fairy in the flames of a .great
fire, but those past that age more of
ten conjure up a boogy man.
Why can't a woman realize that
it is ridiculous to run around the
streets with a great stock of false
curls and puffs on her head?
Every one has his ghost: To par
ents the Thing that is most haunting
is the man who will come along
some day and steal the daughter.
Talk all you please about exact

that a big dog chases a llttlo dog

hind that of Roosevelt, who Is the
first choice of 13G0.
It is to bo considered, too, that
theso expressions were made prior
to tho delivery of Mr. Taft's Lincoln
day address, which has greatly
strengthened his hold on public con
fidence and admiration.
It Is significant that out of a field
of eight, Roosevelt and Taft were
tho first cholco of four-fifths of
those voting. LaFollette, by many
thought to be a popular idol, was tho
first cholco of only 197 editors evi
dence that his radical opinions are
generally considered too extreme for
tho presidential office. Sonator
Cummins, of Iowa, who lias come to
bo regarded ns the political embodi
ment of republican disaffection with
tho now tariff law, also made rather
a poor showiug with G5 votes. On
tho other hand Speaker Cannon, who
is regarded as the political Incarna
tion of tho radical reactionaries, was
tho cholco of only 1 1 out of 3,000
republican editors.
This extensive canvass indicates
pretty conclusively that tho masses
of tho republican voters hold firm In
tholr approval of tile Roosovelt-Taft
doctrlnos. They also declared against
the Aldrlch-Pnyno tariff by a vote of
.GSG against to 812 for. It em
phasizes anew that In tho Interim

Life Snvcr Gives An Account of Res
cue Effort At Tillamook.
Editor Coos Bay Times:
Referring to tho article entitled,
"Why is a Life Saver" in your paper
of February 2, I would like for tho
onlightment of the public and our
learned heavy weather brother who
wrote It, to make a few remarks re
garding his statement about some
crew of other (ho does not say
which), managing to launch a boat
and get to a wreck, but in coming
back running full-tilt against the
beach upsetting and drowning sev
eral persons I was a member of tl
Tillamook Bay Life Saving crew at
the time of tho Argo disaster and
as I think he is referring to that in
cident, I have decided for the honor
of this Life Saving station to tell him
about It. When the Argo was wreck
ed the weather was bad with a dan
gerous surf breaking clear across the
bar, the Argo attempted to cross in
against a strong ebb tide with a
heavy freshet In the bay and a big
tide. She drifted on the South Spit
which she pounded over into open
water In a sinking condition. Mean
while we had left the beach in the
Beebe McLellan boat which Is the
only one we had at that time and
which is I believe the smallest and
lightest boat provided by the service.
She is a self-bailer but not a self
righter and for the purpose which
she is built is a good boat namely
for working off tho beach Inside the
heaviest breakers. We did not think
We had a chance In the world of
crossing the bar In such a boat, but
we just went, and it's nothing short
of a miracle we got through as lucky
as we did. In crossing tho bar our
boat was shot clear off the top of a
breaker by the strong ebb and land
ed the whole weight in the trough
of tho next sea splitting her under
neath just forward of midship on
both sides of her keel. When wo re
ceived tho Argo passengers she al
most swamped with us and we had
to put them on board again, tho'
tho men begged us to at least tako
tho women, which we did promising
to como back as soon as our boat
was fixed. It was then a question of
getting ashore, so bailing all the
while, we started for the beach, the
tide being too strong to cross the
bar. But had we only managed to
get close enough to run our boat full
tilt against the beach and upset It
as our very learned friend puts it,
the danger would have been over,
as. people don't usually drown in one
foot of water. Instead our boat be
ing full of water with each breaker
going clear over her and putting
such a strain on our drogue that the
canvas burst and sho just naturally
capsized half a mile from tho beach
and as most of us were out of com
mission and could not right her the
rest of the way was very turbid tra
veling. Had tho boat been a Dob
bin's self-rlghter tho story would
have been different. Now if tho pa
pers had a true account of the dis
aster saying our boat was obsolete
which is not true, she is all we had
and wo had to mako some attempt.
Sho Is not meant for that work and
Is not truly a life-boat but resembles
a Columbia river fishing boat. This
station has since beon supplied with
a 28-foot Dobbins. If the gentleman
who wrote that article (which is
nonsensical), in the San Francisco
Wasp will read tho Life Saving rec
ord ho will find It a brilliant one but
tho public hears only of tho failures
not tho successes and I want to say
that the peoplo of Tillamook county
have every confidence In the captain
and crow stationed hero who they
know will go whether thero Is a
chance or not. They proved It In the
Argo dlsnster and It was not their
fault that the boat was not all It
might have been. Wo all of us have
our own opinions of the Czarina dis
aster which also has caused much
comment, but tho beach apparatus
litis not a brilliant record for If a
lino does rench a vessel everything
gets fouled by the surf and they ,
mostly drown hauling them ashore
and ir nothing can bo dono with a
boat It Is useless to try to shoot a
lino aboard except In casos where a
vessel Is on the rocks beneath a high
bluff. I would suggest the wise
acre who wrote that in the San
Fiaucisco Wasp go back on tho
ranch and make hay or raise chick
ens from the way he writes ho would
never face a winter's surf on tho
Pacific coast.
Yours very truly,
C. E. TELLEFSON,
Llfesaver.
