OFFICIAL TAPER OF THE CITY
OF MARSHFIELD.
Official Taper of Coos County.
THE TOLL OF THE SEA.
A SHIPWRECK on a home coast
is always moro terrifying and
tragical than In foreign seas.
The toll In human life taken by the
sea Is the heavier when it is levied
upon those whom wo knew and hon
ored and loved in life. It is thus
that tho wreck of tho Argo on Tilla
mook bar, a little time ago, and of
tho Czarina at Coos Bay but now,
came close to the hearts of our peo
ple. For tho rest these tales of the
sea are written in every disaster
which has befallen seafarers since
navigation first began to write its
records on uncharted waters.
There are some calamities that aro
moro terrible In contemplation than
in reality. .This, wo aro constrained
to believe, is true of death Itself in
whatever form It comes. In this
viow tho sea-beleaguered victims of
shipwreck, who looso their hold
upon the rigging and drop Into the
raging wntors, suffer less in the final
stress of disaster than do their
frlonds on shore, who In agonized
helplessness seo tho sea swallow
them up. The comrades that knew,
and tho friends and kindred who
loved Harold Millis, whoso life was
lost in tho wreck of the steamer
Czarina last Thursday, suffered
moro In the disaster that befell, and
tho death that overtook him, than
did ho himself. As sung by Lucy
Larcom, a gentlo' poetess of a past
generation, who was in closo touch
with the sea, and its dlsastors to the
-fishermen who wont out from the
harbors of tho bleak Now England
coast, to tho fogs and gales of the
Grand Banks of Newfoundland:
I' Ills was tho anguish a moment tells,
Tho passionate sorrow death quickly
knells,
But the wearing wash of a life-long
woo
Is loft for tho desolato hearts to
know,
Till hopo drifts dead to Its stagnant
brim,
Whoso tides with the dull years come
nnd go,
Thinking of him.
