DEER INVADE JNEW
ENGLAND TOWNS
'.. SPRINGFH&lb, Mass., Dec. 21.
Rigidly enforced protective legisla
tion in Vermont, Massachusetts and
Connecticut has enabled deer, which
were last becoming extinct, to mul
tiply until they are jiow more nu
merous in Central New England than
they "were at the time of the revolu
tionary war.
Tie continuous stretch of more or
leas sparsely inhabited territory,
.with its abundant supply of small
fruits and garden truck, so tempting
to the deer, has become for prac
tical purposes an immense deer pre
Mrve. A decade ago tho summer
visitor 1b New England rarely caught
a gllnjise of a wild deer. Five years
later the deer had become more nu
merous, but were still an object of
curiosity. In tho last two seasons so
atrmerous have the deer become that
t&ey lurve done much damage to gar
ttona and orchards.
The deer have become bolder with
Increased numborB and the presence
f one at the animals in the streets
ef ike Jarger towns and even the
ctiita Is trquen'ly reported. Hunt
ra kate estimated that there are
In Central New England upward of
H.06D dew. Tho fact that 2,000
deer have been killed in a single
week In each year In tho last two
open seasons In Vermont Is evidence
ot the fcroat numbers of them.
The, deer ,quostion promises to be
the subjeet of lively debate in the
legislatures of Vermont, Massachu
setts and Connecticut, On the one
Rand the friends of tho animals plead
for a continuance of the present pro
tective laws, on the ground that tho
damage done by the deer is over
estimated, and that the deer Is harm
less. Opposed to this argument la the
contention of farmers that they
should be allowed to kill for their
own use deer found on their own
land. In Vermont, the open season
tends to keep down the number of
the animals, and In Massachusetts
under a recently enacted law, the
farmer may kill doer which commit
depredations upon his land. In Con
necticut killing of deer to protect
one's property is allowable, provided
It to don with a shotgun.
The prevalence of deer has given
rise to a crop of animal Btorles. From
Northteld, Mass., recently thero
fcawe a story of hens attacking a
deer. Last week a buck deer gave
battle to two dogs in Westfleld, and
according to witnesses tho dogs camo
out a very poor second. N8t very
long ago a pure whlto deer was killed
lu Hadley, Mass.
Ernest L. Merrlam of Ware, ro
jxirted that while driving to West
Warren a deer attempted to Jump in
to bis wagon . 'A Bolchertown farm
er driving to Ware found his pro
gress barred by a buck deer. Tho
farmer pelted the deer with apples
and now aoekB to recover the value
at tU apples from tho county com
missioners under tho deer damages

for three months with a summer
cold bo distressing that It Interfered
with my business, I had many of tho
symptoms of hay fever, and a doc

which seemed only to aggravate It.
Fortunately I Insisted upon having
