OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE CITY
OF MAKSIIFIEL1).
Ofilclal Paper of Coos County.
OX TO THi: COAST.
ACCORDING to Vice-President
Stubbs, of the Southern Pacific,
it Is the avowed Intention of
the company to 'build the line from
Drain to Coos Bay. Ho says It never
has been the Intention of the com
pany to abandon the project "after
having spent so much money In se
curing rights-of-way, making per
manent surveys and In beginning
work of construction. This state
ment sounds reasonable, and it Is
highly probably that the Drain cut
off to Coos is a certainty of the near
future.
Now if the line from Drain to the
coast Is considered by the Southern
Pacific to be a profitable Investment,
why should not a line from Eugene
to the coast prove to be more so, es
pecially In view of the fact that
Drain as a centre Is not to be con
sidered for a moment alongside of
Eugene. Drain Is a small station
with no surroundings of note to con
tribute to the commercial status,
while Eugene- today stands as the
great commercial center of the up
per Willamette valley territory with
GO to 100 miles in each direction
from which to draw. It Is the point
at which upper valley trade and traf
fic concentrates, which makes It. a
commanding point from which to
connect the coast for inland traffic.
Moveover, between here and the
shores of the Pacific on down to
Coos harbor lies as fine and exten
sive body of timber as lies out of
doors anywhere and this alone would
be one of the greatest Inducements
. that could bo offered for railroad
construction to tidewater.
It will pay to build a road from
Drain to Coos, It will certainly prove
ovon more profitable to have a line
to Florence from Eugene, via El
mlra nnd from Florence on down the
coast to Marshfleld and the moe
ment on foot hero, promoted by local
citizens should have hearty co-opera-tlori
not only of Eugene citizens, but
by residents all along the route with
a llko activity In Coos county nnd
northward connection with the pro
posed Eugono line.
The time Is auspicious for inter
esting transcontinental lines In this
project for the big roads, now
Booking coast connection ought to bo
reauy anu wining .to Join local en
terprise In oponlng up now coast
territory and reaching Important
coast terminals In order to corral
tho growing business In Western
Oregon nnd southward, to put them
selves In closest posslblo touch with
tho Pnnnmn canal, which is to bo the
ono grcnt developer of tho Pacific
coast. To make assurance doubly
euro that we can build a railroad
from Eugono to Floronco and on
down the coast, thoro should bo a
united action all along tho line, not
only for tho purposo of arousing In
terest among those who would bo
directly benefited by construction of
such n road, but for the further pur
poso of awakening tho big railroad
organizations to tho Importance of
uniting with us In tho undertaking
for tho mutual good thnt all parties
concerned will derive from It.
Let us put tho Eugene-Florence,
nnd Coos Bay rallrond project on a
bnsls that will command the close
nttontlon of tho railroad world and
somo transcontinental lino, with an
eyo to business will Join us in put
ting tho lino through. Eugono Reg
